Wikia – Why Work For Us?

Wikia is 120 million fans strong and ranked a Top 20 Site by Quantcast. We operate the world’s largest network of collaboratively published content on the web.

Wikia is home to over 400,000 communities for fans, by fans. We are often cited as the best source of accurate, dynamic, and fresh fan-authored information that is fueling virtually all aspects of popular culture: console and mobile games, cable and streaming TV shows, music festivals, big movie franchises, major sporting events, anticipated book releases, fashion trends and DIY, food and drink recipes, and current events on an international scale. Wikia's fan base continues to fuel consistent growth with over 2 billion global monthly page views in over 200 languages -- more than 40% of the traffic coming exclusively from mobile visits. Fans find their favorite fandoms through seven distinct and discoverable hubs.

  • Games
  • Movies
  • TV
  • Comics
  • Music
  • Books
  • Lifestyle

Whether fans are seeking the latest word on Dragon Age gameplay, adding details to Harry Potter’s family history, or looking for the perfect summer cocktail recipe, Wikia provides an environment for all superfan types to be original and empower their social presence through a creative and collaborative community.

Our Mission

Unleash the power of knowledge as influence. Wikia provides a trusted and customizable collaborative publishing platform on which everyone - really, everyone - can pursue a complete chronicle of what they know and love on subjects that range from video games, movies, TV, and books, to cars, cooking, crafts, education, and travel. By doing so, we empower the expert and satisfy the curious.

Enable personal and collective creativity. Our communities assemble on their own initiative and dwell as living, breathing entertainment destinations -- interconnected through a shared desire to create, collaborate, learn, and inform. The more you learn, the more you have to share. That magnetic appeal our fans organically generate is contagious and inspiring.

Distribute rich, original content. Collaboration is what makes Wikia’s content unique. Our site supports powerful search engine discovery and complementary curation tools for video, photo, text, quizzes, and more. Wikia contributors and readers return again and again for real, useful information -- visiting an average of 4.8 times per month to consume an average of eight pages each visit.

Want to help establish a new standard of fandom? Interested in creating and completing projects together with others for the benefit of millions? Looking to channel your knowledge, experience, and passion into a new type of media company?

We are Wikia, and we're on a worldwide hunt for bright, creative, and determined individuals to join our team, accelerate our growth, and share in our love for all things pop culture. Just like our communities, we are a collaborative and passionate bunch. We have offices in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan and Poznan, Poland and Cologne, Germany.

Our US employees are treated to competitive benefits and a 401K, pet-friendly offices and healthy-snack-focused kitchens. Globally we show our fandom on Wikia Days, our innovation during Hackathons, our competitive side at any opportunity (Whiffle ball anyone?) and share an abnormal appreciation for holidays.

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Wikia full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A strong CEO with a vision of where to take the company. Good environment, leadership AND getting better! Lots of new energy to re-factor and modernize the UX and platform. Great people in nearly every department. Dead wood and caustic personalities are finally going away! Management is open about the problems and has repeatedly engaged the employees to understand and improve and is open to criticism. I've never seen a CEO who was more willing to hear criticism or is willing and accessible to talk to anyone in the company. Few death marches! You're not going to have to sacrifice your life to "save the world" through a "ride sharing" app.

    Cons

People are claiming the positive reviews on GlassDoor are fake or a PR effort by HR. No place is perfect. Most reviewers who are happy filter out the bad and most who are unhappy filter out the good. It's human nature. Even good companies have problems. Most aren't willing to hear or do anything about them but the management team at Wikia is. The truth: Growing pains. Communication problems with a globally distributed organization that's nearly doubled in size in the last year. Hampered by old tech and small thinking in some of the middle management levels. People in roles that grew faster than they have. Management by the last "Management Self-Help" book read by a junior manager is frustrating. The company has been trying to make some big organizational and technical changes and there have been mistakes that hurt morale. A junior Engineering team that can't estimate and developers who think they're "Engineers", an Ops team that takes forever to get anything done because they're still using their own hardware and they want every test or proof of concept to be "production ready", Designers who want the improbable, Product Managers who don't know enough about their product space and what's going to move the company forward, a Business Development team... Ok, I don't know what they do, a Marketing team that's incapable of independent thought, a Sales team that can't close a deal without giving away the kitchen sink and a Community team that runs around screaming the sky is falling because 0.0001% of the 15 year olds contributing to the Five Nights at Freddie's community are unhappy and the business is going to collapse because of it. Almost every one of these issues is actively being worked on. I've been in a bunch of startups and this is still one of the most fun places I've worked, with some of the least stupidity in "pivot of the month" executive management.

    Advice to Management

    - Change and growth are hard. - People don't like change and change is a NECESSITY. - People think they want something right up until they get it. -Listen, take action, evaluate, adjust, repeat. -Don't tolerate brilliant a-holes, ESPECIALLY when it's you.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Wikia (San Francisco, CA) in September 2015.

    Interview

Interview process was pretty straight forward - 1) Discussion with recruiter on the roles and responsibles. 2) Phone Interview with the Head of Engg. 3) Phone technical interview with one of the tech team member. 4) Onsite Interview 5) Phone technical interview with one of the senior tech team member. Recruiter helped to align the process and kept me posted with the updates. I met every team member and the team is amazing. Wikia is a great place to work. I had to decline the offer over another company because of commute reason.
