The wonder of Wenger: Arsenal are a thrilling mix of brilliant and brittle as Sanchez, Giroud and Ramsey fire Gunners into second

Watford 0-3 Arsenal: Alexis Sanchez continues streak with Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey

WATFORD 0-3 ARSENAL - RIATH AL-SAMARRAI AT VICARAGE ROAD: What a glorious, peculiar mess from Arsenal, that club with a personality split somewhere between brilliance and desires to self sabotage. This was another of those days where Arsene Wenger's side simply could not decide if they were fantastically gifted or plain daft. As ever they settled on a compromise, coughing up so many mistakes in the first half that they should have trailed, but recovering with three goals from Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey in the second. At times, the speed of passing and thought was brilliantly Arsenal; at others, the errors were no less characteristic of a side that has a great chance to scratch their title itch this season. Whether they can will depend almost as much on their ability to keep their footing as the shortcomings of bigger clubs

Everton 0-3 Manchester United: Wayne Rooney ends his goal drought away from home as Red

EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED - IAN LADYMAN AT GOODISON PARK: For Manchester United the last two weeks must have seemed like an awfully long time. Defeat at Arsenal last time out in the Barclays Premier League had served to undermine talk of a genuine title challenge and, with the international break coming when it did, Louis van Gaal and his players had an awful long time to ruminate on it. This, then, was the perfect way to return to domestic activity. United were not three goals better than Everton and had to withstand a 15 minute spell at the start of the second half that saw their goalkeeper David de Gea keep the home team at arm's length.

Raheem Sterling, embarrassingly replaced at half-time when Manchester City last played before the international break a fortnight ago, redeemed himself in spectacular fashion with a hat-trick at The Etihad Stadium on Saturday. One of the criticisms aimed against Sterling following his £49million summer move from Liverpool was a lack of goals.

Jurgen Klopp makes it clear his Liverpool team will relentlessly chase success

GLENN HODDLE: For 25 minutes on Saturday, it looked as though Liverpool had absorbed the messages of Jurgen Klopp 100 per cent. With only three days to work with his squad, you worried just how much he could communicate in such a short space of time. And yet Liverpool were very good in that opening period, chasing down their opponents and winning the second ball.
