Tom Brady has described Coca-Cola as 'poison for kids' in a rant about junk food.

The quarterback told Boston radio station WEEI America has been 'conditioned' to believe products such as Frosted Flakes are 'actually food'.

'The fact that they can sell that, you know, to kids, that's, I mean that's poison for kids, but they keep doing it,' the father-of-three said.

Both companies have hit back at Brady's claims. Coke insisted they are a 'responsible company' while Kellogs said cereal is 'a delicious and nutritious breakfast'

'That's just America and that's what we've been conditioned to so, you know, we believe that Frosted Flakes are actually, is a food,' he added.

The 38-year-old four-time Super Bowl winner slammed some companies behind food and drink for false advertising.

'All those companies make lots of money selling those things,' Brady told WEEI. 'They have lots of money to advertise, you know? When you go to the Super Bowl, it's you know, that's who are the sponsors. That's the education that we get. That's what we get brainwashed to believe.'

The Coca-Cola Co. responded to Brady's comments by calling itself a 'responsible beverage company and marketer.'

They said in a statement: 'All of our beverages are safe and can be enjoyed as part of a balanced lifestyle,' Coca-Cola Co.

'We offer more than 200 low- and no-calorie beverages in the U.S. and Canada and a wide variety of smaller portion sizes of our regular drinks.

'As a responsible beverage company and marketer, we prominently provide calorie and sugar information for our beverages so people can choose what makes sense for them and their families.'

Kellogg Company spokesperson Kris Charles insisted Frosted Flakes delivers 'valuable nutrients.'

He said: 'Cereal is a delicious and nutritious breakfast. Numerous studies show that a cereal breakfast is associated with lower BMIs in both children and adults. As a matter of fact, a serving of Frosted Flakes with skim milk has just 150 calories and delivers valuable nutrients including calcium, B vitamins and iron.'

The quarterback, who recently signed on as a pitchman for Tag Heuer with the motto 'Don't Break Under Pressure,' says it's the past failures that have fueled his success: 'These challenging experiences that have been the best things I've ever had to deal with.'

Brady told The Associated Press why he doesn't let critics get under his skin, details of the relationship with his wife and his friendship with Donald Trump.

His marriage to Gisele Bundchen has been under scrutiny recently, with reports suggesting they had been seeking counselling.

Asked how deals with the allegations, he said: 'Well, you compartmentalize. You owe that to your teammates. They gotta do the same thing. Everyone is dealing with something. This is life; this is not just a piece of cake. You expect that when your teammates are doing their jobs, so you got to compartmentalize and do your job. I've tried that over a long period of time; it's tried and tested. That's something you take a lot of pride in. You put all the other stuff aside and go out and do your job, and mine is to be the best I can be for my teammates.

Brady also insisted he still had 'a lot' of football left in him, even though he is 38.

'I have committed myself for a long time to doing it, and because I love doing it so much I want to make that commitment,' he said.

When asked about Republican presidential candidate Trump he said: 'He's been a long-time friend of mine, so we played a lot of golf over the years.

'He's invited me many times to some of his great golf resorts. We've had a lot of fun together. We'll see what turns out with him as a politician, but he's certainly a great friend. Nobody supports their friends like Tom Brady or Donald Trump.'
