Hair's a thing! James Franco grows bushy moustache and dons vintage attire for HBO's Seventies porn drama Deuce

He had only just been born when the porn and prostitution scene was raging in New York in the 1970s.

But James Franco easily slipped into the look of the era when he filmed a scene for HBO's new mini-series Deuce in the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan in New York on Friday.

For the 37-year-old, his bushy moustache and long shag haircut set the tone.

He added to the style with a brown leather jacket with wide lapels, a shiny brown printed shirt, dark grey flared slacks and brown shoes.

The star was obviously proud of his facial hair as he posted a pic of his 'tache on Instagram with the message: 'The Deuce on HBO Get ready for this shizzz. 1970s NYC' with sun emoticons.

The project is partly inspired by the career of twin brothers who were players in the seedy Times Square world and became fronts for mob control of the volatile and lucrative sex industry, according to Variety.

James is doing double duty on the drama, starring as both brothers as well as co-executive producing the series.

The series also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, who will portray Eileen Merrell, a Times Square hooker known as Candy, who’s drawn to the new industry. She will also serve as a producer on the project.

The pilot comes from David Simon, creator of The Wire and Treme,

HBO has yet to set a precise release date for the drama, which is due out next year.
