Could this be the beginning of the end for McDonald's? Franchisees say all-day breakfast is a disaster as company struggles to find its way

  • McDonald's franchisees say that serving breakfast all-day has been a disaster and slowed down service
  • Twenty-nine operators overseeing 226 locations were surveyed about the new menu addition since it launched last Tuesday
  • Restaurant owners say serving breakfast all-day has forced them to hire more employees, which has increased costs
  • They say it also has sparked chaos in their restaurant's kitchens

McDonald's is facing a crisis of confidence according to an internal survey taken among a number of its franchisees.

29 operators overseeing 226 different locations in the U.S. were asked for their opinions as to how the company is performing after recent changes were introduced including expanded menu options and an all-day-breakfast.

The overwhelming majority of operators had a negative view on the company's future with one owner suggesting the restaurant chain was in its 'final days' and that the brand as a whole was in a 'deep depression'.

'We are in the throes of a deep depression, and nothing is changing,' one franchisee wrote in response to the survey by Nomura analyst Mark Kalinowski. 'Probably 30% of operators are insolvent.'

Another wrote, 'The CEO is sowing the seeds of our demise. We are a quick-serve fast-food restaurant, not a fast casual like Five Guys or Chipotle. The system may be facing its final days.'

More than a dozen franchisees expressed frustration with McDonald's management, saying that CEO Steve Easterbrook's turnaround plan — which includes initiatives like all-day breakfast and a shift to digital ordering kiosks — is a distraction from the core issues of McDonald's, like food quality and customer service.

'The lack of consistent leadership from Oak Brook is frightening, we continue to jump from one failed initiative to another,' one franchisee wrote.

A second wrote, 'I have been in this business since the early 1970s but have not seen us this leaderless in all my time.'

Last week McDonald's launched an all-day breakfast menu. A number of their franchisees are not 'lovin' it' and say it has been a nightmare.

Franchisees say that serving breakfast all-day has slowed down service, lowered average bills and sparked utter chaos in the restaurant giant's kitchens.

He found that since the new menu items were added last Tuesday, many of the franchisees were struggling.

'In small stores, the problems are vast with people falling over each other and equipment jammed in everywhere,' one franchisee wrote in response to Kalinowski's survey.

Another said: 'Customers are abandoning us in droves because we are either too slow, or sub-par quality.'

Some restaurant owners also said the launch has forced them to hire more employees, which has increased costs.

A franchisee explained: 'Unfortunately, with the current labor pool in our area, we are struggling to have enough people to run the shift, much less add an extra person.'

Another franchisee said the process is 'erratic, distorted, disorganized direction from McDonald's'.

'All-day breakfast is a non-starter. We are trading customers down from regular menu to lower-priced breakfast items. Not generating new traffic,' a separate franchisee added.

It doesn't appear that the new menu additions will disappear anytime soon though.

McDonald's is trying to revive business following seven straight quarters of same-store sales declines in the US.

In addition to adding all-day breakfast and 'Create Your Taste,' McDonald's has also made some changes to its core menu items.

The company started toasting its hamburger buns longer, making its beef patties slightly larger, and changing how the patties are seared.

McDonald's has also announced plans to remove antibiotics from its chicken.

McDonald's has more than 14,000 restaurants across the US.
