The coldest air mass of the season chilled temperatures across the US and dumped some snow on parts of the Midwest and New England on Saturday - and that could just be the beginning.

The cold front dropped temperatures into the 30s and below in some areas, including in Marquette, Michigan, where thermometers measured 27 degrees and about 2.5 inches of snow fell overnight.

The last time the city had two inches or more in October was in 2001 and the output was its highest daily total this early in the season since October 17, 1976, the National Weather Service reported.

Even though winter doesn't officially start until December 22, freeze watches and warnings and frost advisories have been issued from Missouri to Massachusetts, according to the Weather Channel.

Many locations will experience their coldest temperatures since April this weekend and a dusting of snow was expected to hit the higher elevations of the Northeast on both Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures on Saturday night into Sunday are expected to sink to freezing or below in cities around the country like Minneapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Hartford and Pittsburgh.

In addition to the snow in Michigan and the anticipated snowfall elsewhere, Jackman, Maine, and the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire experienced some light accumulation.

Flurries were expected in other parts of both states as well as in western New York and northwest Pennsylvania.
