Kenny and Emily Caperton began designing the home in 2008 after visiting the original in South Pasadena, California in 2008. The couple had been taking a vacation from house-hunting when Kenny got the idea to build his favorite movie's famous home in his own state. The Hillsborough home, which sits on five acres of farmland, stays true to the original's exterior features. But the couple also added bathrooms and made the four small upstairs bedrooms into two larger ones. They now open the house year-round to visiting fans who want to see the recreation.
