WP:RFD#Watching paint dry

I have cut-and-paste moved the discussion continued after the close WT:NOT#RfC: Should we add a footnote to WP:NOTHOWTO/WP:NOTFAQ stating that it does not apply to redirects? to WT:RFD#Does WP:NOT apply to redirects? I am now squatting on your page and name dropping hoping that all involved, User:Thryduulf, you, me, User:Godsy, User:Steel1943, User:Ivanvector, User:Lenticel and others may contribute to that discussion there. I have mentioned the names elsewhere but I don't know what notifications they may or may not get, so if I have excluded anyone, it is simply my fault of memory. I agree with you, Thryduulf did a grand job of encapsulating it, but I fiddled a bit with the wording in the fourth point, but essentially unchanged. I don't think User:WilyD had much to say on this one. Sorry to squat on your talk page but essentially just trying to tie the various discussions together. I suppose I should put it on my own. • I don't think anyone thinks WP:NOT doesn't apply to redirects. Only that NOTFAQ is quite explicit that it's about how articles are organised, so it's just meaningless gibberish when you try to apply it to pages that don't organise information. It doesn't make sense to add a footnote saying it doesn't apply to redirects anymore than it makes sense to add a footnote saying it doesn't apply to images, or userpages, or whereever else where what it says just isn't on topic. Why would you add a footnote duplicating information that's already in the main policy? Anyone who's read the policy in depth already knows it, and anybody who hasn't gone beyond the short-form link is never going to find the footnote. WilyD 09:08, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Regarding those "Qantas" redirects ...

I thought I'd ask your opinion on this since you provided a "strong delete" vote on the "Qantas" redirect discussions, and I agree with your rationale. After I participated in the most recent discussion, I noticed that there is a page that could be turned into a list page and be modified to be used for these "Qantas" redirects: List of Google domains. In response, I have started the following draft: Draft:List of Qantas domains. I think that the nominated redirects, plus maybe the ones deleted in the previous discussion, could be retargetted to this draft (after it is tweaked and "un-Google-ized") since it will identify all of these domain redirects, but not identifying them as an "official name" for Qantas, since they are not. I think that this will be the most information we will ever have about these domain redirects since I doubt we will ever have an article on them as standalone subjects. What do you think? @Steel1943: I think there's a pretty big difference between Google's domains and Qantas. Besides the fact that Google's primary business originated from its website, it's domains could be considered notable in their own right (maybe. It's along the same lines as German Wikipedia). They're valuable search engines in different languages. Qantas is an airline, and I doubt their website, let alone their domains, would be notable. I don't think it's worth the page, and would be bordering on WP:NOTDIRECTORY. I appreciate the effort though... -- Tavix ^(talk) 17:57, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

I have seen Google ads for Qantas while I am browsing the web, because I Google "Qantas"(!) (cause I love it!). Appreciate you taking the time to list all those bad hockey redirects at RFD. I was actually starting to compile a list myself (of the same ones you are nominating now), but closed the damned window when I got to Ottawa and lost everything. FWIW though, I don't think you need to template Dolovis for every single redirect. Probably a single notification that numerous are going in one shot would be sufficient. @Resolute: I'm doing it the same way I did last time (check the history). Twinkle doesn't allow for mass nominations, so I nominate them all individually and then merge at the end. That's also why he's getting a bunch of notifications. I'll stop doing that, but I have to remember to uncheck the box every time, so it'll take just a bit longer. Ahh. I see. Bit of a shame. I just know that you're going to end up templating him about 100 times - and another editor about a half dozen. But the problem with Twinkle is I know that a third editor had created one such redirect, so unchecking might mean a couple users get no notifications at all. The problem is that this is a very deep rabbit hole. Josh Caron, for instance, redirects to 2010–11 Minnesota Wild season, since there are team-specific draft lists on every team article. For the last decade alone, that is 300 articles to check. I know there won't be a lot. But there will be just enough to be a pain in the ass. Also, I saw one link at List of Telus Cup award winners - and I don't know how many award list for midget, junior, college or senior awards exist, or how many redirects exist. I was contemplating asking a botop to simply generate a csv list of redirects at any list article in WP:HOCKEY. Resolute 00:33, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

@Resolute:The bot idea could be a good one. There's an external tool that lists redirects created, and I was thinking about just going through that when I had time. I've already just nominated the 33 links to draft articles I've found. That list did remind me of a related set, which is "non-notable brother/father/son who also plays hockey --> notable player" redirects. There's a few here I am contemplating a nomination on for the same reason as a test case, but that's a rabbit hole I'm not sure I want to go down, because a bot generated list of redirects for hockey bio articles would be a few million bytes. @Resolute: Wow, you've got a lot of garbage to sort through. Let me know if you'd like assistance with it... If you want to try a test case with the family redirects, I think you have a strong case. Most of it, thankfully, can be disregarded. Redirects that point season ranges with hyphens to those with endashes (2014-15 --> 2014–15), for instance and which are useful. Some of the silly usages of nicknames or lastname, firstname format simply aren't worth the effort to target, imo. Hockey on the ice

The term hockey on the ice or hockey on ice is another term for bandy. It should therefore not redirect to ice hockey, even if that could seem logical. So I remade the redirects again. I hope that's OK with you. Skogsvandraren (talk) 17:53, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

That's not very WP:WORLDWIDE though: Bandy I think is Australian but I think Canadians tend to call ice hockey just "hockey", but in old Englandland "hockey" does not mean ice hockey, but grass hockey (which the British ladies just won in some worldwide competition of girlie sports, Rachael Heyhoe-Flint being a great ambassador (ambassadrix?) for women's hockey and women's cricket, as well as having an umbeatable name and apparently now installed in the House of Lords. I think Britain won the grass hockey at the last olympics, too.)

I suppose that when you say grass hockey, you mean field hockey. Field hockey is never played on ice. Bandy is not Australian, it was originally developed in England and nowadays has its biggest following in Russia and the Nordics. Skogsvandraren (talk) 06:51, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

One thing that may add to the confusion is that the French name for hockey, "hockey sur glace" literally translates to "hockey on ice", which is why this redirect has changed a couple times. Resolute 16:34, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

I think it should direct to ice hockey. In English far more people are going to search for ice hockey by typing hockey on ice than people searching for bandy would. Thus the redirect would be more useful pointing to ice hockey. Or if you want to compromise the hockey article which includes both. -DJSasso (talk) 17:33, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Need help editing sports articles at GOCE

Hello, Tavix - I was reading the discussion on Paine Ellsworth's talk page, and, after reading your comment, I looked at your user page out of curiosity. I see you are interested in sports. I have been working for some time copyediting articles at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests, and there are several articles about sports figures for which a request was made several weeks ago. I have very little interest in sports, so I tend to choose other articles to copyedit. One or two articles on sports figures have been there for so long that the request is about to expire and will be removed if no one accepts the assignment with the {{Working}} template. One is Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests#William Lofland Dudley and the other is Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests#Sam Hornish, Jr. If you feel you could do a copy-edit of those articles, I'm sure the requesters would be grateful. R from sort name

Didn't know {{R from sort name}} existed either. I do check at whatever it is that lists the Rcats and am a big fan of Rcatting as I think you are and BDD is cos I know it is kinda meta-categorisation but it does help when we discuss things to say "look, these are in this category too", it's kinda a small balance weight to me when deciding whether something should go or stay, and I think you are quite right that while tidying up you add the rcat, I tend to do the same, or say "without prejudice to the discussion" (and I mean that) if I add an rcat while it is under discussion, cos the rcat in itself shouldn't influence the discussion, but if it happens to be kept we have the rcat ready with it.

Äh OK fair enough. It wasn't really an attack, IIRC I created it was part of the redirect discussion about disparaging names that we had from time to time (I can't remember the original place name, somewhere in the US, and so can't find the discussion, but another one came up recently), and I probably meant to G7 it myself after the discussion had ended (in case you don't know, it's a pun on the slogan for Polo mints, "The mint with the hole in it"). I don't think a random group of RfD habitues is a good constituency for such a discussion. The potential use of such redirects needs careful thought and analysis. This can happen at some later time, on a suitable forum or fora (e.g WP:VPT). For example some of the apparent potential uses may be completely displaced by alternative solutions. I think the best way to go about it is to make the fix and leave a gentle talk message including the diff. It shows people what the mistake was and how it's fixed and it doesn't revert other things that took place in that edit (I was making changes to comply with WP:DABPRIMARY and your undo reverted that).
