An extra on the set of Zac Efron's film Neighbors 2 has been fired after posting a jokey tweet thanking the actor for a bag of fake weed.

The extra is said to has posted a snap on Instagram with the message: 'Thanks for the weed Zac Efron! BTW it's only a prop, people,' according to TMZ.

Former High School Musical star Efron, 27, has previously sought treatment for alcohol and substance abuse issues, but now says he is sober.

Despite the extra making it clear it was a joke in the Instagram post, it seems it was a little too close for comfort.

Efron did not have anything to do with the decision to ax the extra from the film, according to TMZ, which is being shot in Atlanta, Georgia.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising will see Efron reprise his role Teddy Sanders alongside Seth Rogen's Mac Radner, who played a new dad who ended up living next door to the frat house in the first film.

In the sequel, the frat boys have some hot competition in the form of some sorority sisters, who move in to their neighboring house.

Efron was treated for alcohol and substance abuse in 2013 and say he has been sober since the June of that year.

In March 2014 the actor was involved in a fight with a homeless man in LA's Skid Row, although no arrests were made.

Discussing his drug problems in an episode of NBC reality show Running Wild with Bear Grylls, Efron reflected: 'It got to the point where I was caring less about the work and waiting more for the weekend where I couldn't wait to go out and let loose and have fun.

'But when Monday and Tuesday were difficult to get through, I thought, "This is bad".'
