Liz, 50, became godmother at the weekend to Cosima, the five-month-old daughter of her old friend William Cash and his third wife, milliner Lady Laura Cathcart.

The christening ceremony in Upton Cressett, Shropshire, turned into a double celebration as journalist William’s father, veteran Tory MP Sir Bill Cash, was marking his golden wedding anniversary with wife, Biddy.

Sir Bill revealed that he and Biddy had recently returned to their wedding venue, the chapel of Wardour Castle in Wiltshire, for a private blessing.

The original ceremony was a nerve-racking affair as Biddy, who was just 20, arrived an hour late after being stuck in her car behind a travelling circus.

George Osborne is playing a leading role in negotiations ahead of the EU referendum, but his father-in-law seeks to fulfil a different ambition.

‘I’m attempting to unite Ireland with Britain again,’ says Lord Howell, who has just returned from a visit to Dublin on behalf of the Royal Commonwealth Society.

The former Foreign Office minister hopes to capitalise on the goodwill created by the Queen’s historic visit in 2011 by encouraging Ireland to join the Commonwealth.

‘I’m attempting to get the ball rolling by setting up a Commonwealth office in Dublin,’ he says.

‘Ireland and Britain can be a powerhouse in our own right. Anglo-Irish relations have never been better — we’ve no need for the EU if we are conjoined again.’

Ministers' grovelling to the Chinese during this week’s State visit by President Xi Jinping is unlikely to come cheap.

The Foreign Office has disclosed that the State visit to London by Singapore’s president, Tony Tan, left a hefty dent in British taxpayers’ pockets last year.

Some £64,000 was spent on accommodation for the delegation, and a further £51,000 on transportation.

Hospitality for Tan included a Buckingham Palace banquet and came in at a wince-inducing £43,000.

It's OK women get paid more than me, says Pixie's man

Feminists wail about the pay gap between them and their male colleagues, but top model Oliver Cheshire refuses to worry about being rewarded far less generously than female mannequins.

‘Women spend more than men on clothes and beauty products so, obviously, they get paid more than us,’ says Oliver, 27, the boyfriend of former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Pixie Lott.

‘Men like football more than women do, so the men’s football league is a lot more popular and it’s right they get paid more.

‘In my job, the women get paid five times more. I don’t say it’s not fair, but that’s the way it is.’

DAVID Cameron’s alleged student encounter with a pig’s head is causing deep introspection at his alma mater. The Oxford Union held a debate: ‘What happened at university should stay at university.’ Speaking in favour, Business Secretary Sajid Javid, a Muslim graduate of Exeter University, said: ‘I’ve heard a lot about rituals at Oxford recently. I was concerned you’d ask me to do something with a dead pig. Now, I only do halal.’

Well-read Anne is shamed by her girl

Many well-educated people struggle to finish more than a handful of books each year, but Weakest Link presenter Anne Robinson says her daughter Emma’s reading habits cause her social embarrassment.

‘I’m reading Charles Moore’s Thatcher biography, but I despair of Emma, because she reads only two books a year — maybe one,’ Anne (pictued with Emma) tells me.

‘I read hundreds! When we go out, I’m always terrified who she’s going to talk to.

‘Once, she was next to A.S. Byatt and my heart stopped. But, by some miracle, she’d read Possession [Byatt’s 1990 Booker Prize-winning novel], so they had something to talk about.’

I fear Withnail And I star Richard E. Grant may soon need to close the U.S. branch of his fan club. ‘English women age better than American women because in the U.S. they all have so much plastic surgery,’ the 58-year-old actor declares. ‘It’s much better to look natural.’
