The 36-year-old star leant down to kiss one of the mutts, who gave her face a lick in return.

Dressed in a dark green long winter jacket, she seemed to be on a break from filming as she was wearing a pair of fluffy UGG boots to keep her feet warm.

The actress couldn't stop beaming as she stroked the dog who was very pleased to see her.

And don't blame her! We're never one to blame a person for choosing comfort over a pair of heels.

It's no surprise Katherine had such an affinity with the animals - she has been a dog lover since she was a child and even set up her own charity to help them.

The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, which is named in honor of her late brother helps low-income families to get their spayed or neutered.

It also funds the transport of dogs to no-kill shelters.

She told People'There are enough homes but there aren’t enough people adopting. They’re buying, so animals end up in shelters and because there’s not enough space, they have to euthanize or kill [them].'

She has eight dogs at home with her husband Josh Kelly, and says each one has a special role.

Katherine revealed: 'Piper, a shepherd-lab-chow mix. She’s just really sensitive to me.

Her two daughters, Naleigh, six, and two-year-old Adalaide are also learning to bond with their furry friends.

She said: 'When (Adalaide) was six months I was trying to do tummy time and she hated tummy time. So I put her on her tummy and [dog] Oscar was there and he started licking her face. He loves the kids.'

The Orange Is The New Black star and former Grey's Anatomy actress both play attorneys in the drama in which Katherine's character becomes romantically involved with a client accused of a brutal murder.

If the series is picked up, it would mark a permanent return to primetime television for the actress who has struggled during the past five years to turn her fame starring as Izzie in the medical drama into a Hollywood movie career.

Although she went on to appear in several movies after quitting the ABC show, she failed to find the same success on the big screen as she had on television.

Cox, who is now a big star thanks to her role on Netflix's dramedy Orange Is The New Black and her high profile advocacy for the transgender community, was cast in the first pilot and was kept on for the re-written one.

She plays an Ivy League-educated trans lawyer.
