Eddie Murphy mocked disgraced comedian Bill Cosby while accepting the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC on Sunday Night.

Murphy - who frequently impersonated Cosby during his time on Saturday Night Live - pointed out that in 2009 Cosby received the same award.

He then asked the audience while holding his trophy; 'Did you all make Bill give his back?'

Murphy then said that he thinks Cosby should have one final show, and 'just talk crazy.'

That is when Murphy launched into a Cosby impersonation, saying; 'I would like to talk to some of the people who feel that I should give back my mother fu**ing trophies.'

From there Murphy continued into a five-minute standup set, the first he has done in 28 years and one that he began to plan weeks ago.

His friend and fellow comic Arsenio Hall told The Washington Post that Murphy practiced his routine earlier in the day for him and Chris Rock.

Earlier in the year Murphy had refused to impersonate Cosby at the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special.

Among those on hand to honor Murphy were former Saturday Night Live stars Kevin Nealon, Joe Piscopo and Tracy Morgan - just hours after he hosted the show.

Cosby meanwhile had two more honorary degrees stripped from him last week, this time and honorary doctorate of arts given to him in 2000 by Tufts University and a 2001 degree from Groucher College.

He had previously had degrees revoked by Brown, Fordham, Lehigh, Marquette, Baylor and Wilkes University in the wake of allegations by almost 50 women of sexual assault.

Temple University and University of Massachusetts-Amherst - two schools that Cosby actually attended - have formally cut all ties with the actor.

The cover of the November issue of Ebony was also released last week and featured a photo of The Cosby Show cast in a shattered frame.

The corresponding article is a piece on the juxtaposition of Cosby's beloved portrayal of family man Cliff Huxtable on that show and the assault claims being leveled at him in his real life.

The magazine and its editor Kierna Mayo came under fire by some when the cover was released, but in an interview with CNN Mayo said; 'The bottom line is this is an urgent conversation we're having in black America and it was going to happen whether we did this or not.'
