They are Hollywood royalty, but Reese Witherspoon and Renee Zellweger didn't need a red carpet to entice them out on Sunday.

Instead the actresses pulled on their Team Nanci T-shirts and set off on a 1.6 mile sponsored walk in Exposition Park in Los Angeles to raise funds for research into ALS on Sunday.

Their longtime personal publicist, Hollywood powerhouse Nanci Ryder, has been fighting the horrific disease since last summer.

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from diagnosis.

Nanci was fit enough to be at the event, although she can no longer speak.

They were joined by Courteney Cox, 51, who also wore a black Team Nanci T-shirt.

Reese Witherspoon may have been blessed with great genes but she knows there's only one way to really keep in shape: through good old-fashioned exercise.

The Hot Pursuit star laced up her bright pink ASICS sneakers for a good cause - a walk to raise money for ALS research.

Last year, after learning of Nanci's diagnosis, Reese, 39, said: 'It was devastating. We just cried and cried and then said, "What are we going to do to get busy to change things?" '

Other celebrities at this year's 13th Annual LA County Walk To Defeat ALS included superstar Miley Cyrus, 22, and Pilates expert Mari Wilson, who both took to the stage to lead a class.

Another popular fund-raiser for ALS research is the Ice Bucket Challenge, in which folks post a video of themselves dumping a bucket of iced water over their heads on social media, then challenge friends to do the same - and donate to the charity.

Last summer it became a viral sensation that raised over $100 million for the condition, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease after the baseball player who was diagnosed with the then little known illness in 1939.

And proving that it is possible to live with ALS for many years, world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking was diagnosed at the age of 21 and uses a computer to communicate.

Even though doctors told him he would likely die before his 25th birthday, he has lived more than 50 years with the disease.

About 30,000 Americans are living with ALS at any given time.
