  • Third baseman appeared on football pre-game show to chat with hosts
  • Former quarterback attempted pass, but it flew over receiver's head
  • Football smashed into video display at end of show's set, breaking TV

The New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is used to breaking balls and even breaking records, but new Fox Sports analyst broke part of the set on the first day of his new job.

Rodriguez, 40, was signed by the network to comment on the Major League Baseball playoffs, but was chatting with its NFL studio team when he was asked to toss a football to journalist Jay Glazer.

The pass sailed above the diminutive Glazer's head and smashed into a video display behind him, cracking a television screen as the show's regular analysts broke out in a chorus of 'oooohs'.

Host Curt Menefee told the baseball player, 'Alex you know that comes out of your check at Fox'.

Former New York Giant Michael Strahan said that the receiver should have been someone taller than Glazer, who is thought to be around 5'7''.

In the lead up to the pass, the NFL Sunday team brought up the fact that Rodriguez had been his high school's quarterback.

However, Rodriguez reminded them that his gridiron days were 'more than twenty years ago' before letting loose the pass across the Fox set.

Rodriguez and the participants on Fox NFL Sunday later laughed about the mishap, though one host joked that a new TV would come out of the baseball player's paycheck

Rodriguez, who was previous suspended by the MLB because of his involvement with performance-enhancing drugs, is a controversial hire for Fox. Above right, he tosses a football with his conditioning coach in 2012

'I'll try not to break anything else #whoops,' A-Rod tweeted after the incident.

Glazer said, 'Hey it was lost in the sun!!! I'm pointing fingers at my QB Alex Rodriguez'.

Rodriguez is the network's second controversial hire this season, after all-time hits leader Pete Rose.

The Yankee served a one-year suspension for his involvement with performance-enhancing drugs and Rose was banned from baseball for life after betting on the game.
