And she explained that the semi-aquatic animals had always been her favourite.

'They are very sweet and they are also smart,' she said. 'They use tools, they keep their favourite tools. They hold hands while they sleep.

'There are so many amazing things about otters. Who doesn't love otters.'

And Zooey joked of baby Elsie: 'I love otters, she better love otters. We don't know yet because she's only a few months old. But she's going to.'

The actress started dating Skeleton Twins producer Pechenik in mid-2014, and in January this year she announced that they were expecting a baby.

A week later, she revealed that she was engaged, and said her beau had popped the question on January 17, her birthday.

Zooey confirmed through her rep in early August that she had tied the knot with Jacob on June 21 in a secret ceremony in Texas. She also confirmed that the two had welcomed their first child together.

Talking on The Today Show, Zooey also opened up about her new movie Rock The Kasbah, which is based on the true story of a music producer who took a young female singer to Afghanistan.

'My character is Richie Lanz's last client and also his assistant and he's a music manager,' she explained.

'So he's basically trying to make a little money. And he hears there's a lot of money touring around Afghanistan. But it's a lot scarier than he even imagined.

Lanz is played by Bill Murray, which as one of the reasons Zooey took the role.

'I loved this story. It was such a great story. I loved my character and I thought it was kindof a return to the classic Bill Murray stories that I grew up watching.

'And I felt like, it was a role he was going to be fantastic in. I signed up to watch Bill Murray but it was fantastic for me too.'

Sparkle this season in a dress by Lela Rose

As much as we'd like to focus on the fact that Zooey Deschanel has named her daughter Elsie Otter... we're here for the fashion ladies.

And Zooey provided perfect party dress inspiration with her look last night at the premiere of Rock The Kasbah in New York. With Christmas on the way (what?) we're looking forward to glamming up for the endless round of events that fill our social calendar.

But the question is always 'what shall we wear?' and now we have the answer. A sparkly, glittery dress that will catch the light beautifully as we shimmy on the dance floor. Zooey's fabulous little number is by Lela Rose, a label loved by style mavens like Jessica Alba, Nina Dobrev and Selena Gomez.

So click (right) to bag this beauty for your own party dress collection and style with high heel sandals and a flash of scarlet lipstick to complete the look. For those without the Hollywood-esque budget check out our edit of glitzy, but way more purse friendly, frocks below.
