- Glittering history of Kate's tiara: Duchess chooses Princess Margaret's favourite Lotus Flower headpiece made from Queen Mother's jewels for her first state banquet
- A fashion hat trick! Glamorous Peng Liyuan showcases THREE elegant outfits on first day of state visit with husband Chinese President Xi Jinping
The Duchess of Cambridge (right) took her place beside Chinese president Xi Jinping at the state banquet held in his honour at Buckingham Palace (left) this evening. She dressed in a bespoke red dress - the colour of China's flag - at the lavish white-tie dinner in the palace's grand ballroom hosted by the Queen and Prince Philip, along with 170 other guests. Kate, 33, wore the delicate Papyrus tiara, also known as the Lotus Flower, which was once owned by the Queen Mother. She was seated in the most prominent position for a female member of the royal family after the Queen, beside President Xi. As the wife of the second in line to throne, she takes William's status when she accompanies him, so outranks blood princesses. The Queen gave a speech ahead of the meal where she told the president 'we have much reason to celebrate the dynamic, growing economic relationship between our countries'. The banquet comes at the start of a four-day state visit by Mr Xi and his wife Madame Peng.
