Olivier Giroud goal was right to stand and officials were spot on with Mesut Ozil's second in Arsenal win over Bayern Munich

  • Both Arsenal's goals were controversial in their win over Bayern Munich

  • Extra officials have come in for a lot of stick,  but got second goal spot on

Arsenal pulled off a stunning display of counter-attacking play to beat German champions Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, with goals from Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil.

But both strikes had an element of controversy about them, with Giroud's coming off his arm and Ozil's awarded by the extra goal-line official.

It was a bizarre goal by Olivier Giroud to put Arsenal ahead and one I expect the referee did not see clearly.

Santi Cazorla curled a free-kick into the box which Manuel Neuer missed, and replays showed the ball struck Giroud on his outstretched arm and trickled into the goal.

Giroud bundled the ball into the net with his hand, but it was accidental, so the referee was correct to let it stand

Handball remains the only act in football which must be deliberate and as this instance appeared accidental, the referee was right in allowing the goal to stand.

As for Arsenal’s second, the extra officials have come in for a lot of stick in the past but got this spot on. Mesut Ozil’s strike clearly crossed the line before being clawed out by Neuer.

Replays showed that the much-maligned extra officials had in fact made the right decision awarding the goal
