The dash-cam footage showing the dramatic moment a Georgia police officer shot and killed a driver has been released by authorities.

Police Officer Robert K. Smith, from Emerson, Georgia, shot dead Brent Andrew Brannon, 27 - who was wanted by police on eight felony charges, including trafficking in heroin - during a traffic stop.

Smith, 24, was working traffic enforcement on Interstate 75 on October 14 when he was alerted to a tag violation on a gold SUV traveling northbound on the road, according to police.

He stopped the car, which was being driven by Brannon, at 10.53am, Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman Scott Dutton told the AJC.

In the dash-cam footage, the officer can be seen approaching the SUV in what seems like an everyday traffic stop.

'Let me go check everything and I'll be right back with you,' a calm Smith can be heard telling Brannon in the video.

A driver's license check of Brannon alerted Smith that the Columbus, Georgia resident should be considered armed and dangerous and was an escape risk.

It also revealed that he was wanted on a number of outstanding warrants for trafficking in heroin, sale of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a sawed off rifle, Dutton stated.

Smith requested backup to help facilitate Brannon's arrest.

However, before help could arrive, Brannon became 'non-compliant,' Dutton stated.

'Step out of the car for me,' Smith asked of Brannon, moments before deploying his Taser that was ineffective.

'Drop the gun, shots fired shots fired,' Smith shouted seconds after he fired more than a dozen shots at Brannon.

The video shows Smith clearly shaken by the shooting, as he is seen in front of his car pacing shortly after the shooting.

WSB-TV reported that authorities found two weapons in the SUV Brannon was driving.

Smith was not injured in the incident and has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the case, Dutton said.

Brannon was an Army veteran, who served four years in Afghanistan, according to his obituary.
