Two migrant boats arrive on British soil in astonishing security breach

At least 120 people were able to come ashore at the RAF Akrotiri base overnight - the first time since the migrant crisis began that they have landed directly on UK territory. They were rounded up by British troops (main and inset) before being taken to temporary accommodation. The MoD said that it expected the migrants to be handed over to the Cypriot authorities once they had been processed. Meanwhile, a source on the island accused the Ministry of Defence of allowing the boats to reach the base 'unchallenged' and raised fears they could have been militants from the Islamic State.

The pilot died after ejecting from the plane, police confirmed, with his parachute spotted 'a mile and a half' from the downed jet. Emergency services including police, fire and ambulance crews are all at the scene - which is littered with debris - after a member of the public raised the alarm at 10.30am this morning. It is believed the jet was one of six returning to the US via the UK after combat deployment in the Middle East.

The victim is thought to have been stabbed during an 'altercation' with a group of around five youths or young men.  A neighbour said the injured man was ringing on all the flat buzzers for help before eventually a woman answered and came to his aid.  Police were called to a housing estate in Basildon, Essex, at around 9.30pm on Tuesday (20/10 .  The man, who lived in the town, was treated by paramedics and an air ambulance crew before being rushed to Basildon Hospital where he died from his injuries.  Some residents have been told not to leave their homes and some children have missed school as forensic officers work on the street.

The man, who is aged in his 40s, pleaded for help after staggering to a block of flats in Basildon, Essex, after being stabbed during an 'altercation' with around five youths or young men last night.
