Warbling in an emotion-filled voice on the preview of the track, the Grammy-award winning Adele sang: 'Hello. It's me. I was wondering if, after all these years you'd like to meet to go over everything. They say that time's supposed to heal you, but I ain't done much healing.'

Industry insiders told The Sun newspaper that the much-anticipated ballad is a sequel to her BRIT Award-winning ballad, Someone Like You.

The tabloid reports that Adele's lyrics are believed to relate to meetings she had with a former love, who she wrote much of her second album 21 - which was released in 2011 - about.

While it has never been revealed who put her through so much emotional strife, media reports have previously named fashion photographer Alex Sturrock, 34.

On his text-sparse website, Alex states that he has worked with brands such as Nike, JD Sports, Sony, American Apparel, Vice and NME. There is a section of candid snaps of Adele on her US tour with images of her smoking in bed, sitting next to an 'I love you' balloon and with heart-shaped stickers all over her face.

Heat first linked the pair back in 2012 with an unnamed close friend claiming the couple had dated in secret from summer 2008 to April 2009. The source said they 'hit it off straight away' and 'spent all their time together', with the photographer joining Adele on her US tour in 2009.

The friend told the celebrity magazine: 'He’s a very normal guy and they’d laugh a lot together, eat junk food and ignore the fact that her career was about to go stratospheric.'

They are said to have avoided 'doing things as a couple' and being photographed together.

Describing the relationship as 'volatile', the pal claimed they went their separate ways after Mr Sturrock started seeing someone else.

Around this time, The Sunday Mirror linked Tottenham-born Adele to part-time DJ Ned Biggs, while The New York Post named musician and actor named Slinky Sunbeam as the mystery ex behind Rolling in the Deep.

Adele previously told The Guardian that she will never reveal the identity of the man behind her wounded love songs: 'Who cares? Nobody famous, just old boyfriends. I don't date celebrities. I ain't f****** Taylor Swift, dyouknowhatImean?'

However, while keeping the man anonymous, Adele has been publicly unabashed about hiding her feelings towards him.

In 2011 she spoke of her regret over their romance breakdown: 'I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for not making my relationship with my ex on 21 work, because he's the love of my life.'

The new lyrics have put a spotlight on their relationship with a source telling The Sun newspaper: 'She's written a sequel to Someone Like You, which is what everyone has wanted but no one believed she would do because she's in a long-term relationship with a man who she has a child with.'

This whole process is clearly going to be very difficult for Simon because she's singing about the love of her life - and the reality is it isn't him

The source added the 'whole process is clearly going to be very difficult for Simon'.

In 2012 Adele - who has an estimated worth of £50 million - gushed about her 'wonderful' partner Mr Konecki, telling Vogue: 'He's proud of me, but he don't care about what I do or what other people think. He looks after me.'

When asked if there is a limit on how honest she can be in her songs and what emotions she decides to put out to the public, she told Clash Music: 'I dunno, because sometimes I’m like, "No, I like being honest", and sometimes I’m like, "I wish I hadn’t written that", so I really don’t know.

'I think it just depends on my mood. Sometimes I don’t want anyone knowing any of my business, and other times I’m like, "Maybe I’ll just say it how it is".'

But remaining defiant on the inspiration behind her music, she told Vogue that the mystery man has had 'the biggest impact' on her and has changed her life.

'I can do things that I never dreamed I’d be able to do,' she said. 'If I hadn’t met him, I think I’d still be that little girl I was when I was eighteen. And the best thing is, I now know what I want for myself and from someone else. I didn’t know what I wanted before.'
