In an interview with DailyMail.com, Dr. Phil called the honor 'surreal,' saying her never even thought he would be in the broadcasting field.

That all changed in 1995 when his company worked with Oprah Winfrey, and he has now done 2,325 episodes of his popular talk show Dr. Phil and had on approximately 16,500 guests.

It was a big day for Dr. Phil too, as he learned his show - which has been nominated for 26 Emmys over the years - had been renewed through 2020 by CBS.

'How fortunate am I that my job is something that I love to do,' said Dr. Phil, just hours after the news broke.

'I want to sleep fast to get up and do it tomorrow.'

When asked what his favorite episode or interview had been in his illustrious career, Dr. Phil said they were often 'the shows that involve the children that don't have a voice.'

He then added; 'They can't protect themselves, they can't stick up for themselves.'

He cited one specific example of a young woman who came on his show in an segment called The Girl in the Closet

In that case, a girl was kept in a closet by her mother and boyfriend for six years beginning when she was just eight-years-old.

'She needed to tell her story,' said Dr. Phil.

Some time after the show aired, Dr. Phil said he was in Texas when a trooper stopped him and said that his wife was one of the girl's occupational therapists after she was discovered by authorities, and could not believe that he had actually got the girl to laugh.

'That was just so rewarding,' said Dr, Phil.

The tributes at Tuesday's award ceremony also got very emotional when Frank Gifford's children Cody and Cassidy honored their father.

Frank was a professional football player who went on to become an Emmy-winning sportscaster, hosting ABC's Monday Night Football for an astonishing 27 years.

Kathie Lee meanwhile was honored by her Today co-hosts Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb, who said; 'She taught me the art of live TV.'

Kathie Lee got her start in television when she appeared on Name That Tune in 1974 and since then has appeared on Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee and now Today, earning 11 Daytime Emmy nominations along the way and winning one in 2010 for her work on Today.

After receiving her award Kathie Lee joked; 'Thank God I received this award before Kelly Ripa. I mean, how embarrassing would that be'

Other honorees included Ed Carroll of AMC, Mike Fries, Commissioner of Major League Soccer Don Garber, Chris Geraci, Lou LaTorre, Radio One CEO Alfred C. Liggins III, Philip J. Lombardo, Dave Lougee and Donna Speciale.
