He has made some interesting choices in his acting career.

And James Franco's latest project seems to be one of his most stimulating yet.

The 37-year-old actor was spotted puffing on a cigarette as he filmed scenes for upcoming HBO series The Deuce in Brooklyn, New York on Wednesday.

He was not alone during the day of production as he sat alongside co-star Zoe Kazan on a bench during the shoot, and later on in the afternoon Maggie Gyllenhaal was seen delivering a gift for a scripted moment.

They appeared to be shooting a very emotional scene as the 32-year-old actress put on her best sullen faces while looking at James, who did not seem too concerned with her as he looked off in the other direction.

As the programme is set in the seventies and eighties, James is definitely taking on the role seriously as he sported a very bushy moustache while filming.

The rest of his outfit was definitely perfect for the times as he sported a brown leather jacket over a blue button-down with the top few fastens undone.

The top was tucked into a pair of brown flared trousers as he finished off the look with brown leather dress shoes. 

The 127Hours actor also seemingly grew his hair out for the role as his brunette locks were long and dishevelled with thick sideburns going down to just under his ear.

His co-star also opted into rocking leather as she wore a jacket and knee-high boots in the same material in varying hues of brown.

Zoe also sported a patterned black mini dress while accessorising with a gold necklace featuring a large pendant.

Her blonde locks were pulled back as she sported natural, complimentary make-up on her face highlighted by a swipe of red lip.

Meanwhile, Maggie sported bell bottoms and a trench coat for her day of filming along with horn rimmed sunglasses. 

The drama explores life in the Big Apple in the Seventies and Eighties during the period where porn and prostitution ran rampant.

The project is partly inspired by the career of twin brothers who were players in the seedy Times Square world and became fronts for mob control of the volatile and lucrative sex industry, according to Variety.

James is doing double duty on the drama, starring as both brothers as well as co-executive producing the series.

The series also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, who will portray Eileen Merrell, a Times Square hooker known as Candy, who’s drawn to the new industry. She will also serve as a producer on the project.

The pilot comes from David Simon and George Pelacanos, who are best known for their work on The Wire and Treme.

HBO has yet to set a precise release date for the drama, which is due out next year.
