'Don't you people have any respect?!' Cruel Intentions follow up TV series is in the works at NBC

Reese Witherspoon was pregnant with Ryan Phillipe's baby when Cruel Intentions was released in 1999.

And it looks like her character was too: a TV sequel centered on their child has just been announced at NBC.

Deadline has reported that the drama will tell the story of Bash Casey, the son of Annette Hargrove and Sebastian Valmont, who was killed at the end of the original.

The film's writer and director Roger Kumble and producer Neal H. Moritz have joined forces with Lindsey Rosin and Jordan Ross, the team behind The Unauthorized Musical Parody Of Cruel Intentions, to bring together the new drama.

The stage production generated huge buzz back in May, and was even attended by the original stars including Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair.

Set in the present day, the series will follow the rags-to-riches story of 16-year-old Bash, who finds his late father's infamous journal and discovers his family legacy.

According to Deadline 'he trades his small-town Kansas upbringing for a scholarship to the prestigious Brighton Preparatory Academy in San Francisco and soon finds himself in a world of sex, money, power, and corruption he never could have imagined'.

Cruel Intentions was based on the Choderlos de Laclos novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, which was first made into the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons starring John Malkovich, Glenn Close and Michelle Pfeiffer, as well as young unknowns Uma Thurman and Keanu Reeves.

The 1999 adaptation tells the story of step brother and sister Sebastian and Kathryn - played by Phillipe and Michelle Gellar - who wager a bet on whether or not he can trick Annette - played by Witherspoon - into falling in love with him.

Ryan and Reese were married at the time and were pregnant with their first child, Ava, but would divorce seven years later.

It is unknown if any of the original cast will reprise their roles in the follow up.

Kumble also wrote and directed the much lesser known and universally panned direct-to-video prequel, Cruel Intentions 2: Manchester Prep.

This was originally envisioned as a prequel TV series back in 1999 and was picked up by Fox only to be cancelled; the three existing episodes were edited together to make the film.

NBC has given a 'script plus penalty' commitment to the new project, which means it can still pull out before making a pilot, but it would have to pay a fee to the writer and producer.
