Liverpool 1-1 Rubin Kazan: Jurgen Klopp has little to shout about on Anfield bow as draw

LIVERPOOL 1-1 RUBIN KAZAN - MARTIN SAMUEL AT ANFIELD: It always helps for a manager to get an early sight of what he faces at his new club. The culture, the strengths, the fixes, the flaws. The matchday programme, with his cover image parodying the iconic Barack Obama 'Hope' poster, neatly encapsulated the enormous expectation. Yet Liverpool's failure to overcome a Rubin Kazan team reduced to 10 men after 36 minutes confirmed the size of the task ahead.

Johan Cruyff was a genius who made us try things beyond our wildest dreams

TERRY VENABLES: Thinking of Johan Cruyff fills my head with memories, excites the senses about a game played without fear and beautiful to watch. When you would marvel at the cheek of the man whose audacity left you asking yourself: 'How did he do that?' It was wondrous football of a new era overseen by coach Rinus Michels and understood and expressed by Cruyff. It was Cruyff who showed us what we should all have been trying even if we weren't all capable of succeeding with such composure. Players today are still attempting the Cruyff Turn, a trick he invented more than 40 years ago.

How Argentina became world beaters: Being turned down by the Six Nations only made these purring Pumas get stronger

How Argentina became world beaters: They were turned down by the Six Nations but it only

CHRIS FOY: When Argentina were rounding off their demolition of Ireland in Cardiff last Sunday, television footage showed Agustin Pichot up in the stand, excitedly kicking his feet on a barrier in front of him. It was a seated jig of joy, prompted by the glorious sight of his long-term vision taking shape before his eyes at the Millennium Stadium. After the Pumas had dumped the Six Nations champions out of the World Cup with a stunning 43-20 victory which propelled them into the semi-finals, the former scrum-half rang his wife to confirm that all the years of demanding, long-distance diplomacy had paid off. Pichot was the national captain who made the rapid shift from to the pitch to the corridors of power after ending his Test career on a high - by leading Marcelo Loffreda's class of 2007 to a third-place finish at that year's World Cup. Their heroics in France galvanised the South Americans' demands for a place in an annual tournament, but they needed a figurehead for the campaign.
