The eight-time Grammy winner also proved she has the talent to back-up the hype.

One short clip showed her belting out a powerful vocal for one contestant, telling him after her stunning impromptu performance: 'That's what I want you to do.'

Many of the contestants, already thrilled to be working with the star coaches, were shown losing it as they saw Rihanna, with Korin Bukowski rushing up to her and admitting: 'I'm gonna pee my pants!'

Blind Joe could not hide his excitement at praise he received from the star - cracking her up as he said: 'Rihanna just called me sexy!'

Braiden Sunshine, 15, had the biggest grin as he got to hug Rihanna and Gwen Stefani at the same time.

Braden was also seen getting style tips from the female superstars.

After Gwen told Rihanna that Braiden's 'friend told him he wouldn't speak to him if he put his hair back', Rihanna cracked them up as she turned to him and said: 'Well your friend would when you're making money, honey.'

She gave sexier advice to Amy Vachal, leaving her blushing as she did a sexy dance and told her: 'This is a song about a fantasy - I want you to be in the music…'

'Rihanna is incredible - I absolutely adore her,' the Maroon 5 frontman admitted later.

'Rihanna's an incredible adviser. She's real, and she's wild, and she lets it fly.

'She is so fiercely her own thing,' Adam said.

Rihanna, meanwhile, insisted she was a big fan of the show and excited to play her part.

'I love The Voice, I love giving back and helping others, and this is a rare opportunity where I get to do that with real talented artists,' she said.

Rihanna will be the special adviser for the knockout rounds featuring the artists picked from the Battle Rounds that concluded on Tuesday..

Pharrell had been the only coach left with a steal, insisting: 'I'm hoping to steal an artist that I can invest in and guide all the way to the end of the show.'

He finally used his pick by keeping Morgan Frazier, 22, after Blake Shelton picked 16-year-old Emily Ann Roberts ahead of her after their duet of the Patty Loveless song I'm That Kind of Girl.

Blake regretted putting the two talented singers together, joking during rehearsals that he was 'a genius' for setting up what would be 'the center of the battle rounds', but adding: 'Except I'm gonna have to let one of them go - that makes me stupid.'

After the performance, his fellow coaches agreed.

'It was hard for me decide what I enjoyed more - the performance that was so stellar and amazing, or what a ding-dong Blake Shelton is for putting you guys on the same team,' Adam said.

Telling the girls he was 'just heartbroken - there's vomit inside of my throat right now' at having to make a choice, Blake finally picked Emily Ann as the 'person I think I can make the biggest difference with'.

'I chose Emily Ann because being so young and sounding so unique I just couldn't pass on the opportunity to continue to work with her,' he added later.

After watching Pharrell buzz for the steal - excited because he has never had a country singer on his team - Blake then begged him to 'drop her again in the next round' so he can steal her back again.

The most interesting battle of the night came when Pharrell put Jubal and Amanda - who got engaged on the show - against Brooklyn waitress Amy Vachal to sing The Bee Gees classic To Love Somebody.

It created an interesting dynamic, with adviser Missy Elliott joking about how Jubal and Amanda were 'winking at each other' while singing the love song in rehearsals.

'They were in their own world, like, ''When we finish here we going to the hotel and I'm gonna how you how much I love you'',' she laughed.

It continued during the performance, with Adam joking that Amy was like 'the third wheel on a date', adding: 'There was no way for this not to be awkward.'

But he insisted she was 'awesome' - while Gwen said she was 'a star' who looked like Pocahontas onstage.

Blake was even more enthused, telling her: 'Amy, the most hurtful rejection I have ever had on this show was when you didn't pick me in the blind auditions - it still hurts right now, and your standing there smiling at me while I have a broken heart.'

He then told Pharrell that 'as great' as the loved-up couple had been, 'I just don't know how you move forward without Amy.'

Pharrell clearly agreed, picking Amy after telling her: 'I can imagine people listening to your voice after having a really tough day and you just make everything feel like it's going to be alright. You're amazing.'

'I'm so humbled right now,' she said afterwards.

Adam, meanwhile, picked small-town country singer Shelby Brown over recent high school grad Amanda Ayala after praising her for having 'sassed it up' for her performance.

The girls, both 17, sang Stevie Nicks powerful Edge Of Seventeen, and Adam said of his pick: 'Shelby rose to the occasion, and as long as she continues to rise to each occasion Shelby will not be going anywhere.'

Pharrell also chose Darius Scott over Daria Jazmin, while Blake left Najdah Nicole in tears tears as he picked her over Cole Criske, telling her: 'Dang! It was so good.'

And Gwen chose Summer Schappell ahead of Hanna Ashbrook, telling her: 'You showed so much attitude up there - you've grown.'

Gwen admitted finding the battle rounds tough, saying: 'I'm an emotional girl, and I care. I hate when people go home.'

But she also insisted of the performances: 'So much magic is happening this season.'
