'Best terms': Robin Thicke reveals that he and ex-wife Paula Patton putting their son first on Bravo's Watch What Happens: Live

Blurred Lines star Robin Thicke during a chat show appearance on Wednesday insisted he was on 'best terms' with ex-wife Paula Patton.

Despite their bitter split - including Thicke's album 'Paula' begging her to come back - the soul singer insisted they were once again close.

Thicke, 38, told Andy Cohen on his Watch What Happens: Live show that they managed to put the pain behind them to help raise their son Julian.

Insisting they were on 'the best terms', Thicke said: 'The good thing is when you have that long of a friendship and you have a child that you can put first.

'The most important thing is giving him a healthy, happy life.'

Cohen had made no secret of his own disappointment at the split, with Thicke teasing him that he looked 'all teary-eyed' when he told him: 'I loved you and Paula Patton together. I did, I really did.'

Cohen then asked if he regretted his brutally honest album about his ex and Thicke insisted his only regret was not giving it to fans for free.

'You know, as an artist I have no regrets, because as a writer you write what you feel, you have to express yourself and give it away,' he said.

'As an entertainer, I felt I should have just given it away for free, instead of promote it or try to make it part of my entertainer's process.

'I felt like it was so pure and personal that if I had just given it away then it would have kept the purity of the feeling.'

'I love it when you give it away,' Cohen joked, lightening the mood.

Thicke was joined on the show by movie director 61-year-old Ron Howard.

Howard had the strangest question of the night when a caller asked if when he worked with Chris Hemsworth he had 'caught a glimpse of Thor's hammer?'

'Sadly no,' he laughed.

Insisting he is 'not a stoner', Howard also claimed he did not smoke pot with the cast while making Parenthood, despite there being a lot of the drug in the film, pointing out: 'I hate to burst your bubble but that wasn't real pot.'

Thicke was also asked if he gets free weed from his brother Alan's medical marijuana dispensary in the Venice area of Los Angeles, replying: 'Nothing free, unfortunately.'

He was also asked a series of questions in a game called How Thicke Is It?, including whether he would join the mile-high club with a flight attendant, to which he laughed: 'Depends on the flight attendant.'

Thicke smiled and said he would 'plead the fifth' as to whether he would get involved in sexual 'communal group activity', but asked if he would ever hook-up with a groupie admitted: 'Well, er - yeah I think so.'

But asked if any of the Thicke family would ever run for office, he insisted: 'No, never.'

The singer's new single also stars Nicki Minaj, but he would not get drawn on whether her feud with Miley Cyrus at the VMAs was real or not.

'They're both consummate professionals and entertainers - it could have been a skit that they had planned, and it could have been something private that they haven't worked out yet,' he said. 'I don't have any answer to that.'
