The £75 trainer, which has been mocked in some quarters as the trademark three stripes are Manchester City blue, has proved to be incredibly popular.

Adidas made 1,200 pairs and people have camped through the night at various locations over a staggered release.

On eBay, one seller is charging £750 for a pair of the Gazelle-style kicks and many of those in the queue are thought to be out to try and make a quick buck.

Adidas say the stripes are blue in honour of the 1968 European Cup winning team, who wore an all-blue strip for their victory over Benfica at Wembley.

A source said: 'It's absolutely daft. It hadn't even been announced and people started turning up. They're wrapped up well and some have chairs although I haven't seen any tents yet.'

The clamour may well be good news for a former United star.

Lou Macari owns a chippy around the corner from the stadium and the source added: 'Loads of them have gone to the chippy and come back with food for everyone.'

The trainers will go on sale at 8.30am on Friday.
