The Martian returns to the U.S. box office top spot... as Vin Diesel's Last Witch Hunter and Bill Murray's Rock The Kasbah flop

In what's widely being described as 'box office carnage,' new movies this week from Vin Diesel and Bill Murray and the wide release of the biopic Steve Jobs all tanked horribly.

The sixth installment of Paranormal Activity and a big screen version of the 1980s animated series Jen And The Holograms were also big flops, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Instead, audiences chose to go see The Martian which once again took the box office crown in its fourth weekend, followed closely by last week's number one movie Goosebumps and Steven Spielberg's Bridge Of Spies starring Tom Hanks in third place.

Back on top: The Martian with Matt Damon returned to the top spot in its fourth week of release. It's grossed more than $166 million in North America and passed $200 million internationally

The Martian with its acclaimed performance by Matt Damon as an astronaut left stranded on the Red Planet grossed an additional $15.9 million over the weekend bringing its total domestic haul to $166.4 million.

The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi drama also continued to perform strongly overseas passing the $200 million mark in foreign markets.

The $10.9 million debut of Last Witch Hunter was enough to propel the Vin Diesel fantasy flick to fourth place but it's still a bomb, given it cost about $70 million to make.

Given Diesel's huge social media presence and phenomenal success with Furious 7,  the opening is a major disappointment with the anticipated younger audiences showing little interest in the offering.

The film also starred Elijah Wood and Michael Caine as well as Game Of Thrones and Downton Abbey actress Rose Leslie.

Flop: Vin Diesel developed the fantasy tale The Last Witch Hunter and hoped it would spawn a new franchise. But it failed to ignite huge audience interest. The actor is pictured at the film's premiere in London this month

Bombed big time: Rock The Kasbah was Bill Murray's worst opening and one of the lowest opening films ever put into wide release. The movie also stars Bruce Willis, Zooey Deschanel and Kate Hudson

The news for Bill Murray was even graver as Rock The Kasbah became his worst opening ever and one of the lowest openings in history for a film in wide release.

The movie which also stars Bruce Willis, Zooey Deschanel and Kate Hudson made just $1.5 million and failed to crack the top 10.

Also out in the cold in even more spectacular spectacular fashion was Jem And The Holograms which grossed a paltry $1.3 million.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension did break the top 10 movies list debuting at number seven with a weekend haul of $7.2 million and attracting mostly under-25s.

It's a bona fide hit: Goosebumps starring Jack Black continued to scare up audiences and slipped to second place in its second week, bringing in another $15.5 million for a domestic total of $47.3 million

Goosebumps scared up $15.5 million of business in its second weekend.

The Jack Black film that's a mix of live action and computer-generated effects has cleared $47.3 million so far in North America.

The Cold War drama Bridge Of Spies made $11.4 million and is performing strongly especially with older movie goers, and has a total gross to date of $32.6 million.

Despite tracking that indicated Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs starring Michael Fassbender as the Apple co-founder would pull in adults after expanding from its initial two-week limited release, the film only managed to place seventh in the box office top 10.

The biopic made just $7.3 million and according to Variety, it now seems likely it will struggle to recoup the $30 million it cost to produce.

The trade noted that the film only just managed to earn slightly more in its opening weekend than the previous biopic Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher that was widely panned by critics.

Movie for grown-ups: Audiences are sticking with Bridge Of Spies, a Cold War thriller starring Tom Hanks and diretced by Steven Spielberg that's garnering plenty of awards season buzz
