Country music star Catherine Britt ties the knot to James Beverly while undergoing treatment for breast cancer... as pair reveal they've been secretly married for two years

She tied the knot with beau James Beverly in front of their closest friends and family earlier this month.

But country music star Catherine Britt, who has been undergoing treatment for breast cancer for the last five months, had a special surprise in store for her guests.

Following the ceremony, the singer's father revealed the couple's wedding day also marked their two year anniversary.

To the shock and amusement of guests, he revealed the pair had secretly eloped to Las Vegas in 2013 after just five months of dating - and then never told a soul.

Opening up to Women's Day about their decision to elope and then hold a second ceremony for friends and family, Catherine said: 'We thought it would be a cool thing to tell our children one day.'

On their 'second' special day, the 30-year-old singer donned a long blonde wig as she was in the middle of chemotherapy after discovering a lump in her breast five months ago.

Despite facing the challenge of organising her wedding while undergoing treatment, Catherine was determined to go ahead with the big day.

'Everyone says it's the best day of your life, but it really was the greatest day of my life,' the six-time ARIA nominated artist gushed to the magazine.

The ceremony took place in the idyllic grounds of Newcastle's Bella Vista mansion in New South Wales, with the couple exchanging vows beneath a stunning floral canopy as Aussie rock legend Paul Kelly serenading guests.

Catherine walked down the aisle in a stunning French lace gown by Melanie Ford which hugged her curves in all the right places.

'I knew Cate would look beautiful but I'll never get over just how beautiful she was, it was surreal – all the tough times seemed so far away,' James said of his wife.

Meanwhile, the 31-year-old groom wore an Armani suit as he arrived in a vintage tram with his five groomsmen.

Catherine was diagnosed with breast cancer in June, but has refused to let the illness define her, telling Daily Mail Australia earlier this month that she is determined to keep living as normal a life as possible.

'We thought about putting it off when I first got diagnosed,' she revealed. 'But then I just realised no, this is something really good to look forward to and something positive to keep our minds on that's not treatment, treatment, cancer, cancer.'

Catherine, who is also shortly set to release her new single We're All Waiting, has taken an optimistic approach to her diagnosis.

Daunting as the prospect of losing her long hair to chemotherapy was, instead of lamenting her fate, the talented musician took the opportunity to play around with bright colours and shorter cuts which she shared with her social media following to a host of warm responses.

'I wanted to try some different styles and have a bit of fun with it and make it as positive as you can because it is horrible when your hair starts falling out,' she said.

'It's very confronting, and I think when that starts happening it becomes public. [Prior to losing your hair] only people that you tell know [you have cancer] but when you walk around a shopping centre with a bald head, everybody knows and it is very confronting.'

After making her first public appearance with a shaved head at the 2015 ARIA Award nominations on Wednesday, Catherine admitted she is still getting used to her new appearance.

She said: 'Every time I look in the mirror I get a shock, I'm like "Oh that's right, yeah I'm bald".'

'For someone who's had long blonde hair their whole life it's pretty shocking but I think I'm lucky I don't have a totally misshaped head!' the beauty added with a laugh.

'I just bought lots of great hats and great wigs and beanies and just trying to rock them and get through to the point when your hair grows back.'

Although being comfortable with her hair, she said she wanted to wear a wig on the big day.

'On my wedding day I just want to feel normal so I'm going to wear this beautiful wig,' she revealed.

'I actually bought a really beautiful wig from this wig maker in Sydney, Kylie Clarke, and she does a lot of film stuff and I just thought, you know what I'm going to invest in something really beautiful, that's beautiful real hair and I can sort of have that as an option.'

She also revealed she was excited to say 'I do' to the man she described as her soul mate.

'I think this is the biggest test of a relationship that you can put on somebody and he has just stood beside me one hundred percent the whole way through and just been so strong and beautiful and when I fall apart he is there and he picks me up so I will be very very proud to marry him, I cannot wait, it's going to be amazing.'

The Good To Bad songstress has been keeping an upbeat mentality to prove her diagnosis doesn't define her, but she's the first to admit it isn't always easy to maintain.

'It's hard some days to be positive,' she explains.

'I try my best to just keep going with it and make the most of it I guess and raise awareness so other people don't have to go through this.

'I just want to show people that you can just sort of get on with it and stay positive. I mean, I have my moments but I definitely try to stay positive all the time,' she says.

Catherine underwent surgery to remove an aggressive Grade Three tumour after she was diagnosed with Stage 2A Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, the most common form of breast cancer.

She is currently preparing to enter her second round of chemotherapy which she hopes will be less intense than the treatment she has just completed, which at times left her very ill.
