A close friend of Michael Schumacher says he is in constant contact with the Formula One legend - and says 'there's always hope' he will recover.

Ross Brawn, who worked with the 46-year-old F1 legend when he was dominating the sport, says he visits the Schumachers at their home on the banks of Lake Geneva, Switzerland.

Mr Brawn revealed how he 'prays every day' that the seven-time world champion will battle back from the life-threatening head injuries he sustained in a skiing accident in December 2013.

The 60-year-old was a key player in helping the German secure championship wins with Benetton and, later, with Ferrari.

According to Allan Hall and Alex Wellman writing in the Daily Mirror, Mr Brawn said: 'I do keep in touch [with Schumacher’s family], but we try and keep a balance of going to see him against calling, and not being a pain.

'I’ve been to see him a few times; Corinna, his wife, calls me occasionally and keeps me updated.

'We just keep praying every day that he’ll recover to a stage where…it's slow, but there's always hope.'

Schumacher was one of the most successful F1 drivers in history, winning seven world championships – more than any driver in history.

He became the only driver in Formula One history to finish in the top three in every race of a season and then also broke the record for most consecutive podium finishes.

But the world was left in shock in 2013 when he suffered an horrific skiing accident in the Alps where he regularly holidayed, despite being an experienced skier.

Schumacher, 46, spent months in a coma following the accident before being transferred to a rehab clinic in Lausanne, Switzerland.

He was then moved to a medical suite built into his mansion last September.

Since being transferred to the medical suite built into his home, a news blackout has fallen over his condition.

In February, it was revealed that Schumacher's Norwegian mountain holiday home had been sold for £2million as he continues to recover from his horrific ski injuries.

The sale of the retreat, in Trysil, north of Oslo, comes after it emerged last year that his family was planning to build a £10million 'hospital' room for the star at their home in Switzerland.
