On Monday, Elle Australia editor Justine Cullen told Channel Nine's The Today Show that Mick was the perfect choice to make history as the magazine's first ever male to grace the cover.

'When you are looking for a cover model you are thinking you want someone who is gorgeous, inspiring, relevant and topical – and he is all of those things,' she told the show's co-host Karl Stefanovic.

'I jumped through many hoops but I am so happy with it – he is an amazing role model,' she said.

'I thought he would be a lot more awkward, he was definitely out of his comfort zone but he handled it really well,' she added.

She also described Mick and Jess as 'summer personified,' saying: 'They are the Australian summer.'

The pro-surfer, who recently hit headlines for fighting off a shark during the J-Bay Open event in South Africa back in July, again appears shirtless next to the lingerie model.

Mick is married to model Karissa Dalton, with rumours surfacing earlier this year that their marriage was on the rocks.
