They've been one of the showbiz world's hottest couples for the past 18 months.

But Ellie Goulding has revealed she originally planned to play matchmaker between her now-boyfriend Dougie Poynter and one of her close friends.

And while the 28-year-old pop princess admitted it was 'a bit mean', she said she couldn't resist taking the McBusted heartthrob, 27, for herself.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, she explained: 'I approached him to set him up with my friend.

'Then I was like, "No! I've got to have him". It was a bit mean. The friend that it was for is really happy and in a relationship now.'

Things are now so serious between the loved-up couple - who started dating in March 2014 - that they have discussed marriage.

But Ellie insisted she has no intention of becoming Mrs Poynter.

She added: 'I like my name. Somebody said it once - "Ellie Poynter". I was like, "No, I don't like that".'

The Starry Eyed hitmaker recently revealed she is feeling 'broody', and admitted she and Dougie often speak about having children together.

And the Burn hitmaker revealed her desire to become a mother has become even stronger since her sister Isabel welcomed a baby girl into the world five months ago.

Speaking in an interview with The Sun , Ellie said: 'My sister had a baby five months ago and she's the most adorable kid.

'Having a baby is so life affirming and such a beautiful thing. I'm not a teenager any more so yes, I'm broody.

'Dougie and I do talk about babies, it's natural I suppose. We talk without it being weird.'

But while the British songstress is keen to hear the pitter-patter of tiny feet, she hinted the couple won't be having children anytime soon because of their busy touring schedules.

It would seem Dougie, 27, is on the same page as his girlfriend when it comes to settling down and commitment.

Speaking to MailOnline at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in June, the McBusted star dropped a major hint that he could be set to pop the question anytime soon, but joked he didn't want to 'ruin the surprise.

He told MailOnline: 'She's beautiful and talented... just incredible.'

When pressed further on whether wedding bells could be the next step, he said with a smile: 'Well... I don't want to say too much. It would ruin the surprise.'

Ellie recently revealed she is ready to tie the knot in an interview with the November issue of British Glamour magazine.

She said of tying the knot: ‘God, yes! I’m nearly 30. I once had a pretty warped view of marriage because so many people around me had divorced parents.

'So for a long time I did think that I’d never get married and that men were sh*t - all that stuff.

'But when someone comes along and re-establishes that trust, [whispering now in case Dougie overhears] then it’s nice to think of doing everything the traditional way: having a church wedding, with all my family in one place - I love the idea of that.'

And the couple's friends have given them the seal of approval, too, with Dougie's bandmate Harry Judd recently praising them as a 'very good-looking' duo.

Speaking to MailOnline earlier this month, Harry - who is married to violinist Izzy Johnston - said: ‘Dougie and Ellie are very happy and have been right from the start. They really suit each other and make a very good-looking couple.

‘We’ve gone on double dates before, when we were on tour she was always around and came out to Australia to see us too.'
