Mystery: Sherlock Holmes star Benedict Cumberbatch (right with co-star Martin Freeman) called police after an obsessed female stalker targeted his home, it has been claimed
Benedict Cumberbatch (left with wife Sophie and right at an event in New York) is said to have alerted Met officers after a woman repeatedly turned up at his family home in north London
According to the Sunday Mirror the star has been left 'shaken' by the woman's behaviour.
He is said to have called the Metropolitan Police and the woman was then issued with a Police Information Notice over harassment.
The newspaper reports that the notice bars the woman from attempting to make contact with the Oscar-nominated actor.
A source told the Sunday Mirror: 'Benedict is used to people mobbing him wherever he goes and he's a good sport about it. But this individual has taken things to the next level and there was no option but to pursue official action.
'Turning up at professional events is one thing but arriving uninvited at the family home is quite another.

'It might be that she thinks it’s harmless, but it does feel a bit sinister. Leaving red ribbons is obviously a bit of a game, but it does feel quite dark.'
Red ribbons feature in the Sherlock Holmes mystery 'A Study in Scarlet' with the detective's accomplice Dr John Watson using them to secure his scrapbook of case notes.
The stalker alert comes after Sherlock producer Steven Moffat revealed the show's much anticipated festive special will air on New Year's Day 2016.
Moffat, the show's creator and writer, told fans at London ComicCon this afternoon: 'I can exclusively reveal that the long wait for Sherlock will begin again in the late evening of January 1st.'
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will head to the Victorian era in the New Year's Day special, while an eerie trailer for the episode was released earlier this month.
MailOnline has requested a comment from Benedict Cumberbatch's representative.
