'They try to make money off you': Tom Hanks hits out at 'quack doctors' who prey on the sick as he talks about his wife Rita Wilson's battle with breast cancer

Tom Hanks has only words of praise for his wife Rita Wilson after she won her battle against breast cancer.

The 59-year-old, however, voiced anger in a new interview over quack doctors who prey on the sick by offering less than scientific solutions for patients battling cancer.

Speaking with news.com.au, the Cast Away star saluted his wife of 27 years for her courage in the face of the illness.

In the same chat he recalled how his eyes were opened to predatory 'quacks' who 'try to make money off of you' by promoting less than scientific procedures to cure cancer.

'It all adds to the difficulty, and we are lucky we can afford good medical care, but there are people who are dealing and selling in false hopes,' the actor said candidly.

In June Hanks' wife Rita, 59, revealed she had 'won' her battle against breast cancer.

The actress - who shares two children with Hanks - underwent a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction in April after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma.

Speaking as she walked the red carpet at the 2015 Tony Awards at New York's Radio City Music Hall she told E! News: 'I feel great. When you do Broadway, you have a family there and one at home as well. I had so much love through the process. I'm very thankful.'

The Girls star previously admitted she made the decision to go public with her illness to encourage other women to get checked for breast cancer because 'early diagnosis' is key when it comes to beating the disease.

She said: 'I feel blessed to have a loving, supportive husband, family, friends and doctors and that I am the beneficiary of advances in the field of breast cancer and reconstruction.

'I am getting better every day and look forward to renewed health.

'I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn't 'feel' right.'

After returning to Broadway in May following time off for her procedure and recover, Rita said: 'I want people to know that even though you go through life altering experiences, that this beautiful thing we call life, goes on.

'I know that not everyone will have this good fortune but I think it's important to let you all know that there are good stories. I hope this article is helpful in some ways to someone you know who may be dealing with a similar circumstance.'
