The loyal fan continued by writing: 'Like GLENN HAS BEEN THERE SINCE DAY 1 YOU CANT DO THIS TO ME AMC'.

But viewers may not have to worry too much about Glenn as the show's creator Scott Gimple said on The Talking Dead that the beloved character may not be gone forever.

'Dear fans of The Walking Dead, this is a hard story to tell and when we were planning to tell we knew our friends at the Talking Dead would be talking to you about it and knowing you'd all be talking, and feeling and commiserating, I knew we should say something about it lest our silence say something we didn't mean to say or not say.'

'So I'll say this: In some way, we will see Glenn, some version of Glenn or parts of Glenn again, either in flashback or in the current story to help complete the story.'

But it may not be enough, as one fan wrote: 'if glenn isn't really dead im suing the walking dead for DESTROYING my SOUL'.

Celebrities also got in on the action, sharing their heartache over what appeared to be the loss of Glenn on Sunday.

Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi shared a string of tweets regarding the episode, ranging from grief and frustration to theories the character may still be alive.

'Hysterically crying. SO DONE #TheWalkingDead,' the Jersey Shore alum posted, though she seemed a bit more cheery as she later speculated: 'Hardly a memorial ...MAYBE HES ALIVE?!'

Meanwhile, Sunday’s episode was a particularly gory bloodbath, with beloved characters being wiped out or mortally threatened en masse.

While protagonist Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) fate was left precariously hanging Nicholas did the dirty on his friend Glenn.

Nicholas (Michael Traynor) had been a pitiful coward until the end of last season, when he redeemed himself and was reintegrated to the crew’s respected inner circle.

But the ‘Supply Runner’ proved himself to be a weakling once more when, after being trapped in an alley by a horde of zombies, he shot himself in the head, leaving Glenn to seemingly be ripped apart.

Nicholas and Glenn had been cornered by a multitude of Walkers - who had corralled them onto the lid of an unsteady trash receptacle.

As the hideous undead closed in Nicholas appeared to zone out into a dozy reverie, while Glenn shouted his name in desperation.

With glazed eyes Nicholas looked at Glenn, who has saved his life on numerous occasions, and said: ’Thank you,' before pulling out a gun and shooting himself in the temple.

As he tumbled from the elevated surface he took Glenn down with him - and while Nicholas’ death was fast and painless Glenn was seemingly left to die in excruciating pain.

However, some critics and fans believe that like the the infamous death of Game of Thrones' - spoiler alert - Jon Snow, Glenn may not really be dead.

Vulture wondered if Glenn somehow survived the gruesome turn of events with the late Nicholas as his shield.

Describing the soul-crushing scene, Vulture explained: 'Now, here's the important part. You'll see that as they are doing their trust fall into the zombie horde, Nicholas is on top of Glenn.'

'The important part' Many wondered if, due to the way that they fell, Glenn had been able to use Nicholas as a shield, and the zombies were instead feasting on the fallen Alexandrian, and not Steven's character

'And when the zombies start feasting, it's very clear from multiple playbacks that it's Nicholas's body they're eating.'

Also, both Vulture and Forbes called into question the way Glenn's death was handled on the series' after show - The Talking Dead.

Steven - who played Glenn - was not on the episode to discuss the loss, as is usually the case, it was never said explicitly that the character had died, just that he 'appeared' to have died, and his character did not appear in the usual in memoriam wrap-up that follows each episode.

Suspicious: Fans and critics alike are finding it odd that Steven - who plays Glenn - did not appear on Sunday night's episode of The Talking Dead, as actors typically do following their character's deaths

Instead, the screen simply read: 'Please don't let this be true. Please don't let this be true. Please don't let this be true.'

The actor was also reportedly spotted on set, with actor Tom Payne who will be playing Jesus in upcoming season six episodes - though the context isn't known.

Meanwhile, if Glenn is in fact dead, he was certainly not the only loss in Sunday's brutal episode, which saw Alexandria's leader Annie (Beth Keener) hiding out to try and avoid the carnage brought on by the Wolves.

The gut-wrenching episode had opened with Rick and a breakaway group attempting to lead the hoard of Walkers away from the safe zone.

Off to a rough start: Immediately after Rick gave his warning that some members 'might not make it,' the group ran into a horde of zombies and a man's throat was ripped out

Off to a rough start: Immediately after Rick gave his warning that some members 'might not make it,' the group ran into a horde of zombies and a man's throat was ripped out

No sooner had Rick advised Glenn and Michonne (Danai Gurira) that some of the weaker members ‘might not make it’ than a man’s throat was ripped out by a zombie.

Unperturbed, Rick lurched in to salvage the weapons from the corpse. ‘Get back safe,’ he told the others coldly, who soon got ambushed by a slew of the starving undead.

In the confusion Sturgess (Jonathan Kleitman) shot Scott (Kenric Green) in the back of the leg by accident - he then ran away like a coward.

Another bumbling Alexandrian, who has a wife called Betsy back at the camp, got bitten badly on the shoulder.

Michonne and her group later found themselves huddled in a pet shop as they tried to come up with a plan, during which time Glenn volunteered to be the bait - to light a building on fire to create a distraction so everyone could escape.

‘But you have a wife,’ said Michonne. ‘That’s why I’m doing this,’ he replied bravely, while two other members of the group asked to be left behind because they were so badly injured they did not want to slow the group down.

Series newcomer Heath (Corey Hawkins), angrily replied: ‘Ok, we don’t leave people behind, not us,' seemingly in a dig at Michonne and her people, following Rick's earlier remarks.

However, Michonne had not planned on leaving anyone behind, and told him as much, defending Rick’s advice while accusing Heath of ‘not knowing’ how bad they'd had it.

Almost didn't make it: Michonne's group continued to dwindle as they went on, and she almost died herself as she got caught by the mob of zombies as she rushed to climb over a fence

‘Have you ever been covered in so much blood that you don’t know if it’s yours or the Walkers or your friends? Then you don’t know,’ she spat.

They hid in the pet store until they were attacked from all angles by the ominous ‘herd.’ As they ran away one of the injured fell, proving Michonne’s point quite succinctly.

She later almost died herself while trying to scale a fence as walkers pawed at her, but luckily managed to escape just in time.

Rick, meanwhile, was in almost as precarious a situation as Glenn, as the episode saw the group leader stuck in an RV after trying to lure a horde of zombies away from their home in Alexandria.

Back to haunt him: Rick was left vulnerable as he was attacked by a group of Wolves that Morgan had let go the previous week

As he tried to contact the rest of his team on the radio, he was ambushed by the Wolves Morgan had allowed to flee last week - with their only gun.

Rick managed to dispatch the two, but was shocked to find baby food in one of their rucksacks, knowing that it probably came from Judith's stash.

But there was no time to contemplate it as he spotted more Wolves approaching in the rearview mirror

Panting furiously he unloaded his machine gun through the wall of the RV, killing the lot.

Visibly shaken he tried to escape but was unable to start the vehicle’s engine – and was left helpless as a legion of vile zombies approached.
