'It was painful... I took a pretty deep dive': Jared Leto reveals toll of going 'method' to play The Joker in high-anticipated Suicide Squad

Jared Leto has revealed the toll that going 'method' to play the twisted The Joker took on his psyche. 

The actor, 43, told Empire magazine that throwing himself into the iconic role took him to a difficult place as he tackled the creepy role in upcoming film Suicide Squad.

'There was definitely a period of…detachment. I took a pretty deep dive,' he told the film magazine as he posed in character in sweatpants and a long purple coat for the December cover

The actor posed in character as The Joker for the cover of the magazine, going barefoot and wearing a long purple crocodile-skin coat and blue sweatpants as he held a cane.

His bared chest showed off The Joker's many tattoos as the actor gave a menacing glare.

The Oscar-winner, who also sent bizarre gifts including a live rat, a bullet and a dead hog to his fellow cast and crew on set, described the process as like 'giving birth out of my prick hole.'

'But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn't imagine doing it another way,' he told Empire.

'It was fun, playing those psychological games.'

On Monday, Suicide Squad director David Ayers tweeted a new photo of Jared and Aussie costar Margot Robbie in character as The Joker and Harley Quinn.

'Time for a little thereapy (sic)', he captioned the image, adding '#skwad.' 

While in character as The Joker, the Thirty Seconds To Mars frontman also sent creepy gifts to cast members Margot Robbie and Will Smith, their costar Adam Beach previously revealed.

Margot, who plays The Joker's girlfriend and super-villain Harley Quinn a love letter with a live black rat and sent Smith, who plays Deadshot, a bullet, Beach told E! News.

Leto also sent a dead hog to the crew, along with a video letter of himself in character. 

'Basically, what he said was, 'Guys, I can't be there but I want you to know I'm doing my work as hard as you guys,' Beach, who plays Slipnot, told E! News.

'The video he showed is in character. It blew our minds away. Then we realized that day, this is real.'

It is not the first time the acclaimed actor has thrown himself wholeheartedly into a film role. 

Jared won an Academy Award for transforming himself into an HIV-positive transsexual woman in Dallas Buyers' Club in 2014.

In addition to Jared, Margot and Will, the highly-anticipated Suicide Squad also stars Cara Delevingne, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis and will included Ben Affleck as Batman.

It is set to be released on August 5, 2016. Affleck will also star in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, out on March 25, 2016.
