The finding by the EU that President Jean-Claude Juncker’s Luxembourg and the Netherlands had breached state aid rules by granting tax privileges to the subsidiaries of two multinational companies – Starbucks and Fiat – could prove immensely important. If the global avoiders should fail to do their bit, the Chancellor should consider the use of ‘imputation’ – a tax on a proportion on sales or turnover – to make sure that Google, Amazon et al get no special treatment. ...read
