Donald Trump may be losing his mojo in the GOP primary for president.

A national CBS/NYT poll released today shows him in second, behind Ben Carson, for the first time since he entered the race in June.

Trump took 22 percent of the vote in the poll to Carson's 26 percent. The other 13 Republicans competing for the White House had single-digit support.

For the first time since Donald Trump entered the presidential race, he's a LOSER to Ben Carson, as the retired neurosurgeon has gained steam nationally and in the early state of Iowa

In third was Marco Rubio with eight percent.

Tied for fourth were Jeb Bush, whose struggling campaign laid a third of its headquarters staff off last week and cut its budget by 40 percent, and Carly Fiorina.

Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and John Kasich had four percent each. The New York Times did not reveal other, lower performing candidates' scores.

The national CBS poll is one of several published in the last week that points to a slow down in support for Trump.

Two recent surveys of Iowa showed Carson in front of Trump by eight points or more. One produced by CBS and released on Sunday showed them tied.

In New Hampshire and South Carolina, though, Trump still commanded a large lead of his opponents, CBS found.

Once cordial to Carson, Trump has ramped up his attacks on the retired neurosurgeon following his gains.

At an event last weekend the billionaire said Carson is 'super low energy.'

Donald Trump has sent out a flurry of tweets bashing Ben Carson since Carson started besting Trump in the polls. Today's release is the first time Carson was ahead in a national poll

On Twitter he said, 'Ben Carson wants to abolish Medicare - I want to save it and Social Securiy.'

In another tweet Trump charged: 'Remember that Carson, Bush and Rubio are VERY weak on illegal immigration. They will do NOTHING to stop it. Our country will be overrun!'

Yesterday he retweeted a supporter who asked, 'How is any one taking Carson seriously when he "suspends" his presidential campaign for a book signing tour?'

Carson has not formally suspended his campaign, but he did clear his schedule for two weeks to promote his book.

He's participated in events on the side, however, including one on Saturday in Ames, Iowa, outside a fraternity house.

Asked about Trump's attacks on him then and the billionaire's retweet of user asking if the genetically modified corn in Iowa was affecting voters' brains such that they would support Carson, he said he would not get in the 'mud pit' with his opponent.

Later in the day he gave a little ground, though, and said, 'My energy levels are perfectly fine.'

'As I've said many times, there have been many times where I've operated 12, 15, 20 hours, and that requires a lot of energy. Doesn't require a lot of jumping up and down and screaming, but it does require a lot of concentration.'
