'We're not doing the Bond thing': Indiana Jones producer says Harrison Ford's iconic role will NOT be recast as he talks about franchise reboot

  • Chris Pratt had been widely tipped to star in a new Indiana Jones movie
  • It's not yet clear how the franchise would be revived without Indiana Jones and Marshall said it's going to take a lot of thought about how to do it
  • Producer Frank Marshall says 'there's a bunch of people who could probably take the baton'

There shall be no other Indiana Jones but Harrison Ford.

That's the decree handed down by Hollywood producer Frank Marshall in an interview with Britain's Total Film magazine.

'We're not doing the Bond thing where we're going to call somebody else Indiana Jones,' Marshall said.

That means that while a fifth installment of the iconic franchise is likely to happen at some point, the lead character would be different from the one created by Ford, who's now 73.

As for who could take on a role that reboots the Indy franchise, it seems that frontrunner and fan favorite Chris Pratt isn't the only one up for consideration.

'There are a lot of rumors,' Marshall told the magazine.

'We haven't even sat down to talk about Indy yet,' he added. 'At some point we'll sit down. But there's a bunch of people who could probably take the baton.'

Disney bought the rights to Indiana Jones, as well as Star Wars, when it acquired LucasFilm in 2013 and the studio has already embarked on a flurry of Star Wars movies and spin-offs.

Just how a new series of Indiana Jones films might work is something Marshall clearly believes is likely to take a lot of thought.

In the fourth film Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, Shia LaBouef starred as Ford's on-screen son, leaving the way open for a reboot featuring an offspring of Indiana Jones.

Marshall's comments also don't rule out the possibility that Ford would return for a fifth adventure as Indiana Jones but in more of a supporting role.

Irreplaceable: Ford, pictured in August, is 73. He reprised his iconic role of Han Solo for the Star Wars film The Force Awakens so it's not a stretch to think he could return as Indiana Jones in a supporting role in a reboot

Helping hand: In his fourth outing as the archaeologist and adventurer, Ford had an on-screen son played by Shia LaBeouf who helped him take on the Nazis once again in Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, released in 2008

Back in 2012, Steven Spielberg who created the franchise with Marshall and his producer wife Kathleen Kennedy,  told the New York Daily News: 'If there's an 'Indy V,' Harrison has to be the age that he is when we make the picture.'

'He's going to have to play that age, and we'll write that into the script,' he said.

And of course in 1989's Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade, former Bond star James Connery played Indy's dad Professor Henry Jones who disappears while searching for the Holy Grail.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark, which introduced the swashbuckling archaeologist to movie audiences in 1981, and its four sequels have now grossed almost $2 billion worldwide.

In the third Indy film Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade, released in 1989, former James Bond star Sean Connery played Ford's on-screen father Professor Henry Jones
