'Vapid, vacuous and plastic': Russell Brand labels ex-wife Katy Perry's lifestyle the 'very thing I detest' in explosive documentary

They were one of showbiz's most unlikely couples, splitting after just 14 months of marriage.

And it seems Russell Brand always had doubts about his compatibility with Katy Perry, revealing in a new documentary that he found the pop princess' lifestyle 'vapid, vacuous and plastic' even before they tied the knot in October 2010.

The 40-year-old comedian says his visit to Africa for Comic Relief in the spring of 2010 had a profound effect on him, leading him to question his relationship with the Firework hit-maker when he realised his values had changed.

Speaking in documentary Brand: A Second Coming, which was filmed during the couple's marriage, he said: 'The stuff in Africa hit me really hard.

'I'm associated with the very thing I detest: vapid, vacuous, plastic, constructed, mindless celebrity. That's the very sea we're swimming in, "Oh, who's he?" ... "He's married to Katy Perry".'

Elsewhere in the film, Russell is seen mocking his wife in a stand-up routine and admitting to friend Stephen Merchant that he didn't think their marriage would last.

He told his pal: 'It's definitely good I'm with someone I love. But it's not a resolution to anything spiritual...

'This is my suspicion, that at some point, to be happy, I'm going to have to walk away.'

Yet another scene shows the British funnyman's friend Noel Gallagher admitting he knew their union wouldn't last.

Katy is said to be feeling very upset and 'embarrassed' by the revealing documentary, which director Ondi Timoner has admitted Russell doesn't approve of.

A source told Britain's Grazia magazine: 'It hurts like hell for Katy to re-live her painful marriage like this. She feels vulnerable and embarrassed.'

Russell and Katy's whirlwind romance famously came crashing down in the midst of her mammoth Teenage Dream tour when Russell sent her a fateful text message.

'He hasn't spoken to me since he texted me saying he was filing for divorce,' the pop star confessed to The Telegraph newspaper.

The former married couple had shared a life together for less than two years co-parenting a cat named Rusty - a combination of both their names - and even getting matching Sanskrit tattoos on their inner arms.

Katy first met Russell in mid-2009 when she filmed a cameo, in which the two kiss, for his comedy Get Him to the Greek, although the snippet was cut from the film.

The pair shortly began dating after meeting again at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards in September, when the songbird threw a water bottle at his head from across the room during dress rehearsal.

That same year, Katy and Russell became engaged on New Year's Eve in India. They married in October 2010 in a Hindu ceremony in Rajasthan.

Russell filed for divorce on December 30, 2011 citing irreconcilable differences, and their divorce was finalized in July 2012.

That same month, Katy tearfully talked about her divorce from Russell in her autobiographical documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me.

She revealed that conflicting career schedules and not feeling ready to have children with him, led to the demise of their marriage.

Two days after their divorce was finalized, Russell told Howard Stern that he was extremely in love with Perry, but realized after marrying her that their love was not meant to be.

'We did work it out, she’s happy, I’m happy. I was really, really in love with her, but it was difficult to see each other, it mostly didn't work for practical reasons,' he said at the time.
