As a global style icon, all eyes were on the Duchess of Cambridge as she walked the red carpet at Monday night's Bond premiere.

The 33-year-old certainly pulled out all the stops in the sartorial stakes, turning on the glitz in a bespoke diaphanous pale blue full-length gown by her go-to evening wear designer, Jenny Packham.

What didn't go amiss was the fact that Kate appeared to go braless as she showed off her back in the delicately draped dress.

Beat winter blues in a pastel dress like the Duchess

Spectre is the third James Bond film to be chosen as a Royal Film Performance Title and the 007 cast must be feeling honored to have the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge walking the same red carpet at the Royal Albert Hall.

The movie is one that's been long-awaited and while we have been crushing over Lea Seydoux, Monica Bellucci and Naomie Harris' dresses, we've been on the countdown for the royal arrival.

The Duchess opted for a Jenny Packham gown for the occasion, choosing a piece in a wintry pastel blue with beautiful waist embellishment. This is the third time this year the princess has chosen British designer Jenny Packham, who has clearly become one of her favorites. She originally wore the brand back in May when leaving the hospital with Princess Charlotte and then again just recently for the Chinese President's visit to the United Kingdom.

You cannot buy this blue piece, but if you click through to Net A Porter (right) you'll find Jenny Packham's current ready-to-wear line which you can shop now. Alternatively, scroll our edit of dresses below which will help you look royally fabulous this winter.

This, note fashion experts, proves that the mother-of-two has learnt to take a risk when it comes to red carpet dressing.

In her early years in the royal family, a demure Kate would conceal every inch of flesh, opting for play-it-safe black or white gowns, which never revealed her back or too much of her chest.

Last night, however, Kate's dress featured a crossover chiffon front and modest V-neck, while the design of the back of the gown flashed a daring hint of Kate's lower back.

Meanwhile, an intricate beaded band around the waist helped highlight Kate's slender frame.

Her look received mixed reviews. One commenter wrote on social media: 'Sorry Kate, but this is a fashion flop. Mum's night gown should have been left on the back of the door to the toilet where it belongs,' another wrote: 'Oh dear, how matronly.'

But fashion insiders say Kate's choice is a symbol of her newfound confidence. As Milda Chellingsworth, Stylist, personal shopper and founder of www.stylingforyou.co, explains: 'This Jenny Packham backless dress showed that she has secured her own sense of style.

'The Duchess has always shown a natural fashion sense, but over the years she has become more confident in the pieces she is choosing and is really finding her own sense of style.'

It may have been floor length, but who would have expected the Princess to wear a sheer, backless and braless dress?

Naomi Isted, Fashion and Beauty Influencer and Editor of The Ultimate Lifestylist, added: 'She’s clearly feeling much more confident of late in her role as Princess and mother as her style is continuously evolving.

'Her outfits are becoming increasingly daring. Last night's premiere confirmed this with a stunning yet uber sexy Jenny Packham gown. It may have been floor length, but who would have expected the Princess to wear a sheer, backless and braless dress?

'It looked stunning and she wore it with royal poise. I am sure we are set to see many more refined yet sexy pieces from the Princess.'

Some critics even believe that the Duchess of Cambridge's new style proves she has 'come of age' and found her place with the Royal hierarchy.

'She is making a statement, and not just a fashion one,' said Lillie Gregg, founder of womenswear label Lily-Beau.

'Since becoming a mother, she has found her self confidence and isn't afraid to walk in her own light and out of the shadow of William and the Royal family. She has been away on maternity leave and attending to her mother duties, as she should be allowed to, and now it's her time to shine and she wanted to come back in true style, which she has successfully done.'

Kate has also become more experimental with her beauty regime, once favouring bouncy curls, as seen here in 2011. Now, however, she often experiments with new cuts, such as bangs, or a sophisticated up-do like the one she wore at the Spectre premiere

Indeed, it's plain that the 33-year-old Duchess is no longer the ordinary, middle-class girl who Prince William met at St Andrew's University.

Today Kate appears a seasoned public figure, rather than the girlish student that William first introduced the world to.

Assured, confident and always impeccably dressed, Kate is outshining royals all over the world - and it's all thanks to her children, who have given her a newfound confidence.

Never less than appropriately dressed, motherhood has seen her take more style risks in the style stakes.

As well as a boost in confidence, Kate has completely revamped her day-to-day wardrobe since entering the public eye, slinging out Sloaney separates and country garb in favour of chic designer dresses and the hottest high street picks.

So popular did the Duchess' high fashion teamed with high street style prove, everything she wore began to immediately sell out - a phenomenon dubbed 'the Kate Effect', which sees everything she wears turn to gold.

Kate always gets the sense of occasion just right, dressing in an appropriate colour, designer, or adding a subtle custom detail that gives a nod to the place she is visiting. It shows a real affinity with her role and her wardrobe - and is a far cry from the wellington boots, unflattering knitwear and tweed she once favoured.

And it's not just her wardrobe that's had an overhaul; look closely and you'll notice a total beauty transformation, too.

Her glossy, long brunette locks - often worn in a half-up and half-down style - now appear richer in colour and more coiffed and she often experiments with new cuts, such as bangs, or a sophisticated up-do like the one she wore at the Spectre premiere.

Her porcelain skin looks more bronzed and her face appears slimmer, her youthful apple cheeks less apparent, and her make-up much more carefully applied than back when she found fame.
