Lancastrian Neil Hodgson is confident he can step up his bid for the AMA Superbike title this weekend in Fontana.

The Burnley-born rider, who is chasing the American title to complete a unique treble of Superbike crowns, lies second in the championship after an encouraging start to the season.

Hodgson, who rides for Austin Ducati, heads to Fontana 21 points adrift of early leader Mat Mladin's Suzuki but is optimistic he can improve.

He said: "We made the bike go a lot faster through the flip-flop bends.

"I was really happy with that and I was pleased with how the bike turned. If nothing else, we have learned something that might help us at other tracks."
