For most flyers, the airport is a place for wearing your most comfortable clothes and easily removable shoes - but for the jet set it has long been an unofficial catwalk.

A new book, A Journey In Style, aims to celebrate the relationship between fashion and flying and features photos of trendsetters such as Bianca Jagger in the Seventies up to Victoria Beckham today.

Model Yasmin Le Bon, 50, who also features in the book, said: 'There's something fabulously glamorous about flying that has always fascinated me and to this day I still get excited about travelling.'

Yasmin, whose modelling career spans over 30 years and has fronted campaigns for Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, and Karl Lagerfeld, also wrote the foreword for the coffee table tome.

She said: 'From the starlets of the Fifties stepping on to the runway in their oversized sunglasses and trollies stacked with monogrammed luggage, to today's style icons, air travel has always been packed with stylish possibility.'

Celebrities must run the gauntlet of photographers as they step off planes and strut outside to their waiting cars, and the supermodel - who travelled the world during her fashion career and with husband, Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon - says that a few candid snaps of her have made it into the volume.

She said: 'The book includes stunning archive images from some of the world's most renowned photographers, including Dennis Stone, Heathrow's resident photographer since 1946 – and there's even one or two of myself in there.'

Yasmin also revealed that there may be more travelling in her future, as she contemplates turning 51 in a few days time.

She recently told Red Magazine: ‘I will not grow old gracefully. It will be disgraceful.'

She added that as her three daughters have grown up she's open to adventures, adding: 'I want to go hiking in Chile, discover more of Europe… Who knows, the world’s my oyster.’

The hardback book, the proceeds of which will go to Oxfam, features Twiggy, on its cover, snapped as she waited to board a flight to Tokyo in 1967.

The 160 photographs include Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Mick Jagger, The Beatles, Kate Moss and even the Queen.

Airports are clearly having a fashion moment as Karl Lagerfeld transformed the catwalk of his spring/summer Chanel show into a futuristic terminal with models including Kendal Jenner wearing comfortable flatform shoes, loose dresses and wheeling cases.

But while stars are snapped as they exit terminals around the world, they are almost certain to be guaranteed privacy on board.

Etiquette expert William Hanson advises passengers in business or first class on conducting themselves when they're within 'restraining order distance of someone from the world of film, TV or sport'.

He said: 'One of the reasons they’ll have paid to turn left, not right, is not only because of the superior comfort, but also the fact it’s more private and far from the maddening crowd in the back, giving them more a chance to relax and unwind.

'Don’t ask them for a photograph, engage them in desperate conversation or try to befriend them . Ideally, and some of the more established stars will appreciate this detail, pretend you have no idea who they are.'

The book is available to buy at Amazon.co.uk and from the T5 Art Gallery this week for £15.
