They met and fell in love when they joined forces to film A Beautiful Mind in 2001.

And Jennifer Connelly returned to familiar territory after she teamed up with husband Paul Bettany in upcoming gritty movie, Shelter.

Sizzling on the front cover of The EDIT, the 44-year-old beauty talked about the demands of working with her partner, who took helm as director for the first time in his career.

‘I thought it would be stranger than it was,’ she explained. ‘In a way, it felt very familiar. We met at work. We’ve been on the same set; we’ve been on each other’s sets.

‘And it was really great to have that much trust, to have that degree of intimacy with your director, especially when the subject matter is so intense. It’s an amazing feeling of freedom and safety.’

The Hollywood couple are parents to four-year-old daughter Agnes and sons Stellan, 12, and 18-year-old Kai from Jennifer’s relationship with photographer David Dugan.

The film was Paul's first directorial effort - which he also wrote - while Jennifer played a grief stricken heroin addict called Hannah.

Despite enjoying the fact she was working with the 44-year-old British star once again, it meant she couldn’t get out of doing her homework.

‘Well, he didn’t have to worry,’ she confessed. ‘I was doing my homework... He saw me hunkered down!

‘We have similar sensibilities, we respond to similar films, we like the same performances, and I think that he had a sense of comfort, knowing we were creatively aligned.’

But the American actress said balancing the competing demands of work with family was perhaps a little tough and ‘probably miserable’ for the couple’s three children.

‘Because it was low-budget with only a few days to shoot, we really couldn’t leave it all behind at the end of the day,’ she added. ‘We had to prep each night for the next morning.

‘Although it was probably somewhat miserable for the kids, it actually helped that the film was being made on such a short schedule.’

In the drama, the Golden Globe winner's character Hannah has a second chance at love with homeless musician Tahir (Anthony Mackie).

Shelter hits US theaters/VOD on November 13 and UK cinemas on November 25.
