Our investigation has discovered how it is only the threat of price rises or political intervention that prompts higher than average numbers of homeowners to move to a different provider. Four million fewer energy deals were switched last year compared to 2008, despite industry attempts to persuade people to move to a better tariff.

The small print that says you CAN quit TalkTalk: Hacked telecoms giant is refusing to let customers leave without paying... but we found a loophole
Angry customers have been trying to escape their contracts with TalkTalk since the firm revealed last week that it had been the victim of a cyber attack which led to personal data and banking details being accessed. It was the third attack in 12 months. But those who have attempted to quit have been told they must pay hundreds of pounds to break their contract early.
'We've brought Lindisfarne Castle into the 21st Century': Two months until sun sets on solar panel grants
Castle steward Nick Lewis oversaw the £45,000 project that resulted in 48 panels being placed out of view on the east roof. 'I'm careful but phone contracts were still signed in my name': As cyber-attacks become more sophisticated, we look at how to protect yourself from...THE DARK WEB
TalkTalk is the latest victim of a cyber attack, compromising the bank details of four million of its broadband and phone customers. But it's not alone, according to a former MI6 officer who warns of 'mushrooming' losses for companies and a greater risk to consumers. Married IT security consultant Tom Chantler (pictured) is confident he has never given anything away that would result in his bank account being raided. But the 39-year-old, who lives near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, discovered in May that contracts for top-end mobile phones had been taken out in his name.
Bungling Scottish Power still owes customers thousands months after it won our wooden spoon winner
The company, owned by Spanish giant Iberdrola, is struggling to clear a logjam of complaints triggered by a botched £200 million computer upgrade. More than 18 months after Money Mail revealed it was having problems, complaints are still pouring into Money Mail's postbag. Among the disgruntled customers are Lynne McCaughey and her daughter Cate, 12, (pictured).
ASK TONY: I've paid £28,000 for life cover on a plan I bought in 1985 - so why is it now worth only £2,000?
I have a life cover plan with Old Mutual Wealth to pay out on the first death of my wife or myself. When I bought it on October 1, 1985, the premium was £15 per month with life cover of £27,757. Payments have risen to £165.27 per month. In July, I was told that if I wanted the same cover, I would have to increase my payments to £395.76.

Some of Britain's biggest firms are racing to snap up computer programs which can analyse a photo and tell whether someone is a smoker, has been ill or is likely to have a shorter than normal life expectancy. It's all part of a growing scientific field called facial analytics, which is taking off in the U.S. It is based on the theory that the faster someone ages physically, the shorter their expected lifespan.
