Robin Hood actor Jonas Armstrong was given 80 hours of community service for punching an elderly hotel worker, it has emerged.

Armstrong, 34, admitted beating up an unnamed man in his 60s in a drunken hotel brawl at 3am while filming on location.

The actor, who has previous convictions for drink-driving and being drunk and disorderly, lashed out at a member of staff at the Mount Royale Hotel in York.

He was in the city to film Dark Angel, a Victorian period drama due to be broadcast on ITV next year.

Police were called to the scene of the brawl which, according to The Sun, also saw Armstrong fall on top of his victim in a confrontation on a hotel staircase.

Paramedics treated his victim, while Armstrong was arrested by police and spent a night in jail.

Jonas admitted one count of assault by beating at a York Magistrates Court hearing held on September 25.

He was handed 80 hours' unpaid community service, a 12-month community order and a total of £365 in fines and court costs.

£50 of the total was given to his unnamed victim as compensation.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: 'Officers were called to an altercation at the Mount Royale Hotel at 3.15am on August 26.

'A 34-year-old man from Lytham St Annes was arrested after assaulting a member of staff in the vicinity of the stairs. He punched them and both lost their balance and fell.'

Armstrong played the title character in the BBC's Robin Hood series from 2006 to 2009.

He has a history of drunken crime. Earlier this year he was slapped with a driving ban after refusing to give a breath sample to police who stopped him at the wheel.

CCTV footage showed him claiming he had not been drinking and blaming his slurred speech on cough syrup.

He was also hit with a 16-month driving ban in 2012 after a breath sample showed he was three-and-a-half times over the drink-driving limit.

In 2010, Armstrong was arrested in Blackpool after trying to punch a taxi driver and swearing at police officers. He was later convicted of drunken and disorderly behaviour.
