Rated: Yamamoto marks every bowl out of five (above) and so far he hasn't found the perfect instant noodle
Toshio Yamamoto, from Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan, has been fascinated with noodles from a young age.
According to Japanese news site, The Asahi Shimbun, it was a chance encounter with a novel brand of instant noodle, which Yamamoto hadn't seen before, that prompted him to document the many renditions he's eaten.
He started using every opportunity to travel with his job as a design engineer for electric appliances to search out new brands of noodles, both within and outside of Japan.
At one point, he was eating instant noodles for breakfast seven days a week, although he has now cut this down to five.
For life: Yamamoto says he was interested in noodles from a young age. He's been an obsessive for 20 years
Novel: The noodle fanatic is always looking for new flavours and has already tried noodles from 40 countries
Yamamoto started the i-ramen blog in 1996 and later added a YouTube channel under his username Tontantin.
He explained: 'When you finish eating the noodles, the content will be gone even though the packaging remains. I want to keep records of the content.'
To date, he's tried 5,657 different instant noodles - and each of them has a dedicated video.
His obsessively details price, cooking method and even nutritional information. At the end of each review, Yamamoto gives the noodles a mark out of five.
So far, his favourite noodle has only been awarded the highest mark of four.
But the noodle fanatic notes that his favourite food has been evolving.
Niche: Yamamoto has been documenting his noodle journey since 1996 and has amassed a niche fanbase
Expertise to share: The 55-year-old has now written two books on the subject and is said to be writing a third
He said: 'In the old days, the focus was on giving consumers practical benefits such as some nutritional value as well as saving time on cooking.
'Today’s products incorporate a change in people’s palates and culinary trends to better serve consumers.'
Yamamoto also notes that different countries have different style preferences. For example, cup noodles are much more popular in developed countries.
Having tried thousands of noodles from different parts of the world, Yamamoto has become something of a noodle expert.
He has already published two books showcasing different brands of noodles.
Last year, he took early retirement from his job to concentrate on his obsession and is said to be writing another book on the subject.
There's another reason too - Yamamoto still wanted to find his five-star instant noodle.
