But with the help of a generous family friend, Carl was able to make the 4,000 mile trip to arrive just an hour before his mum was due to have her transplant.

Footage of the emotional reunion at University Hospital in Atlanta has already been viewed more than 20,000 since it was posted on his YouTube channel.

The moving video shows Carl arrive at his mother's bedside to give her a surprise she will never forget.

As he walks into her hospital room, the shocked Mrs Brooks - who was lying in her hospital bed - exclaimed: 'Oh my god. Oh my bloody boy, what the hell are you doing here?'

It was tears all round as Carl wrapped his arms round his mother.

He strokes her cheek and kisses her forehead as emotional music plays over the top of the video.

'So I sat in bed and cried this morning 'cause I'm like I didn't see my boy,' the delighted Mrs Brooks told her son.

You see his mum say 'thank you' and Carl tells her 'don't get excited, take a deep breath' as he walks over to hug his dad, Chris, 58.

His father, who is originally from Eastbourne, in Atlanta, also seemed emotional as he gave his son a big hug.

Carl added that it had been an 'amazing' experience all round.

'I got to see her and she was amazed and shocked. It was really cool. When I walked into the room you see her face. I've never seen my mum react or look like that before, he told Fox News.

'It's something I'm going to hold in my heart forever.'

The heartwarming moment was only possible thanks to the generosity of family friends including Donna David who booked him on the last minute flight from Germany to Atlanta.

Carl admitted that when he came to watch the video back to post it online, he burst into tears.

'It's so touching to my heart!' added the self-confessed 'mummy's boy'.

'Even though the surgery is a frightening prospect I am so so happy and so thankful that she has been given this opportunity to get off dialysis and start getting on the old mend,' said Carl.

A month on from the operation and Sarah is said to be recovering well.

The footage ends with him surprising his sister Joanne, the kidney donor, who comes and joins the group and is with them for nearly 30 seconds before she spots her younger brother.

When she finally spots him she leaps up and starts to cry while everybody laughs at her delayed reaction.

They hug it out and Carl says 'surprise', to which she replies in typical sibling fashion, 'I f****** hate you.'
