'We were suffocating with grief': Bob Geldof reveals he proposed to Jeanne Marine the day after daughter Peaches' funeral because they 'needed air'

Bob Geldof has revealed the reason he proposed to wife Jeanne Marine the day after he buried his daughter Peaches.

The Boomtown Rats frontman admitted that he was already going to propose to his long-term love and, although he worried it might seem 'inappropriate', the family needed 'air' to breathe.

The 64-year-old discussed the situation during an interview with RTE Radio One, speaking of April 2014, when his daughter died at the age of 25 from a heroin overdose.

'Peaches' sisters [Pixie and Fifi] were in agony,' he remembered. 'We could either let time do its thing but time doesn't heal, it just accommodates.

'You push it aside until it forces its way to the fore again. I thought 'I have to do something'.'

He added, of his girlfriend of nearly 20 years: 'I had planned to ask Jeanne to marry me. And then, because of Peaches, I thought it would be entirely inappropriate.

'But then we buried her and the next day I decided to let some air into the room.'

Bob went on to detail the 'suffocating grief' the family were enduring, following Peaches' April 7 death last year.

She was buried just two weeks later, at the same church her tragic mother Paula Yates - who also died from a heroin overdose - was laid to rest, at the St Mary Magdalene and St Lawrence church in Kent.

Bob continued: 'We were suffocating with grief and we needed air in the room. We needed light in that air.

'I'm getting Bono-ish here but love is all you need.'

The star then regaled the emotional moment he asked Jeanne, 49, to be his wife, in front of his entire family and friendship circle.

'I asked a friend of ours to host a dinner for Jeanne's birthday. I got the ring, which resembled the planet Mars in its girth and size.

'I got up to thank her for the dinner and went on to say that I couldn't have survived - and the children couldn't have survived - without Jeanne.

'All the women started blubbering and I dropped to one knee. She grabbed the ring and I grabbed it back and said, 'No, you have to answer me first before you get it.' She said yes.'

After 19 years together, Bob and Jeanne tied the knot in a beautiful and star-studded ceremony in the South of France on September 19.

This came after previous reports that the Live Aid organiser had actually wed the French actress in April.

According to the Sunday Mirror newspaper the couple simply signed paperwork at that earlier time but celebrated their union in September, with guests including Bob's daughters Fifi and Pixie, and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York.

A source explained: 'In France a formal wedding usually has two parts, and this weekend was the main event.

'It's quite an intimate affair. Bob doesn't really go in for all of that celebrity excess. He just likes to be around his closest friends and family.'

The small ceremony took place at a beachfront house near Nice, France, at around 5pm in the late afternoon with a reception held after.

Peaches died of a heroin overdose at her home in Kent last April, leaving behind her two sons Astala and Phaedra and husband Thomas Cohen.

Musician Thomas, 24, has spent the last year and a half raising their boys, who are now three and two years old respectively.

Her death was a haunting reflection to that of her own mother Paula, who passed away in 2000 at the age of 41 of a heroin overdose.
