'It's dangerous being a pop star': George Stephanopoulos suffers a nasty fall while 'performing' as Ed Sheeran on GMA's Halloween special

  • Anchor appeared as the pop star for show's Halloween special
  • Fell off stage when lip synching as the ginger singer
  • 'It's dangerous being a pop star', Nick Lachey quipped
  • He quickly recovered and was back on camera moments later

Maybe it was stage fright?  Either way, GMA anchor George Stephanopoulos clearly spooked himself a little too much with his Halloween costume this year - falling off the stage in an over-enthusiastic attempt to mimic pop star Ed Sheeran

The star, who usually takes a much more low-key approach to his costumes, got into the spirit this year wearing a ginger wig, flannel shirt and fake tattoo sleeves to appear like the young pop star.

But as he prepared to lip-sync one of the singer's hits, he was chased off stage by some over-excited 'fans' in a joke segment - and fortunately for him they were there to catch him.

A loud bang and a wave of uproarious giggles from the other GMA stars on camera revealed the anchor had taken a fall.

'It's dangerous being a pop star', quipped Nick Lachey who was still in his Ken doll box costume.

His co-host Sara Raines couldn't control her laughter over the 'surprise ending' while reassuring weatherman Rob Marciano told him 'even with the fall it was fantastic'.

Thankfully the tumble wasn't too bad as Stephanopoulos was back on screen moments later watching while Lara Spencer did a hilarious impression of Donald Trump doing the Nae Nae.

It comes with some irony that Stephanopoulos was the GMA host to get carried away. He was mocked before the show special began for appearing as George Clooney for two years running.

The serious newsman appeared as the film star with new wife Amal played by Lara Spencer last year.

In 2013 he donned an astronaut costume to appear as the movie star in his hit film Gravity.

But Clooney wasn't on offer for three years running so he had to put up with being the teen girls' favorite Sheeran instead.

The morning show goes head-to-head with rival Today every Halloween.

Both shows dress their stars up in an array of outrageous, hilarious and sometimes downright weird costumes for the special.

This year Good Morning America selected characters from all kinds of pop-culture while the Today show took on the classic characters from the Peanuts comic strip.

'This is our Super Bowl, our Christmas, our Thanksgiving...we live for this all year long!' Savannah Guthrie said on Friday morning.

The festivities kicked off just after 8am, with the GMA cast showing off their over-the-top outfits just before the big reveal Today. CBS This Morning does not dress up for their Halloween show.

Robin Roberts started proceedings, dressing as Cookie Lyon from hip-hop TV show Empire, and was joined by T.J. Holmes as Lucious Lyon.

The pair were followed by Stephanopoulos as Sheeran. Lara Spencer as Donald Trump and pregnant Ginger Zee as The Hulk.

Meanwhile, the Today Show brought the Peanuts comic strip to life, dressing up as each and everyone one of the cartoon's child characters.

The cast revealed their costumes in a skit, based off scenes from the upcoming Peanuts movie, due out in November.

The skit started with Willie Geist banging away on a miniature piano as the yellow-haired Schroeder, before scurrying off to class.

The next scene showed Tamron Hall as Peppermint Patty chatting with Natalie Morales' Marcie at their desks before their teacher incoherently reprimands them to pay attention.

At a school dance in the following scene Savannah Guthrie plays Sally, trying to get the apple of her eye, Carson Daly's Linus, to dance with her but as always he doesn't seem very eager.

Then, Snoopy and Woodstock come jetting in on Snoopy's dog shed - played by Hota Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford in early for the Halloween spectacle.

The skit ends with Al Roker trying to kick a football as Charlie Brown, but ends up running into Lucy instead - played by a cross-dressing Matt Lauer.
